Asian Network Uni Tour Kicks Off!
The Uni Tour 2006 kicked off last Friday night at Nottingham Trent Uni's Student Union, where we broadcast the show live on the Friction show. It was a homecoming of sorts for me as I studied at Trent in the early (ahem!) nineties. The line up for the night was Me, D-Boy & The Playback Project (feat. Sharifa Shi & Rabbia), Lyppicool (Nottingham’s Best Beatboxer and a serious talent), Raxstar, DJ Kayper & Inja, The Mentor Kolektiv plus The Specialist.
Gotta say that Nottingham’s lookin' fine as a city. When I left in 1994 (yes! that long ago!) the general consensus was it was on its way down as the Midland club scene moved to other cities and it just started looking like a dirty and squalid city in some parts. Fast forward to 2006 and it looks like its back on its way up again. It seemed busy and the faces I saw looked happy and positive.
Anyway, my highlights were watching D-Boy and the Playback Project inject some serious new sounds into the arm of British Asian music (which is much needed at the moment) and seeing Lyppicool be a star all over again. I first met him backstage at Nottingham Mela a couple of years ago when he impressed with his skills - at the age of 14!!. In fact he was so good I pulled him up on stage there and then and he brought the house (or should I say Forest Park) down! On Friday night he jammed with Raxstar and together they showed the future of Brit-Asian music is something to be excited about. My other highlights in no particular order were Mentor & Des-C having a water fight on stage while they performed, Specialist playing 10 songs in a minute stretching between Hip Hop, Drum n Bass and Bhangra (that man is a SICCKKK DJ) and seeing DJ Kayper scratching while standing on flight cases so she could reach the decks! (Hee hee - see the picture)Gotta big up the listeners at home who texted in their droves and made us feel like we were partying in Nottingham as well as inside all of your front rooms as well.
Next Night was the KCL (Kings College London) Diwali Ball in Battersea Park London. Talk about a change! On Friday night we played to Music Fans and Business students at Trent Uni all dressed like it was a club night. Here we had trainee Doctors, Lawyers and Academics in smart suits, saris and kurthey pajamay acting like they were gonna run the country in twenty years (which they will no doubt!). The whole night started 2 hours late as they had various acts to finish watching in another arena but when the party started it started PROPER. Punjabi Hit Squad turned up with Ms Scandalous & Allisiya (and I had to calm my self down and try not to say the wrong thing to them - y'know in a suggestive way coz they are FITTIES!). Plus the two thousand plus people were in a 'letting off steam' kinda mood which as any DJ will tell you is a great type of crowd to play to. I have to big up DJ H (Ishq Brandy) and DJ Smooth plus friends for getting everyone so drunk that by the end of the night most of us had trouble standing up (or was that just me...?? hmmmm)
Roll on Leicester and Essex later this week. I am so intrigued to see how the MDK Collective will do down as I’m a massive fan and want to see if an Asian crowd can see the talent inherent in a new act or will they want force feeding of familiar music and artists? They MDK Collective sound like a Dub Step attack on Grime convoy - Will Leicester get it?
Also (DA DA DAAAAAAA! The sound of dramatic violins etc) will Raghav be wearing sunglasses again indoors? And on a more serious tip, will his new stuff go down well?

Post your commentPlease Bobby, someone tell Raghav, that wearing shades in a night club is JUST NOT COOL!!!! Even the most serious bad ass rapper can't carry it off - so what chance does Raghav have!
