New 成人论坛 homepage launches
Following two months in public beta, yesterday we launched a new version of the 成人论坛 homepage.
In my last blog post in March I talked about the reasons for launching the new version of the 成人论坛 homepage and pointed out that most of the work for this update has been to move the site to a new technical architecture. Back in May 2008 the 成人论坛 announced plans to build a new service-oriented architecture to accommodate the increasing number of visitors to 成人论坛 websites and to enable new features to be delivered more quickly. The 成人论坛 homepage is one of the first sites to be moved to the new infrastructure.
During the homepage beta we introduced a new navigation bar across the top of the page to facilitate easier and faster access to the most popular sites across the 成人论坛. If the site you're looking for isn't listed simply choose from the 'More' drop down menu or type what you're looking for in the Search box.
The new navigation bar is slowly being rolled out across the entire 成人论坛 website - it was included in the recent re-launch of the Dr Who website. While these changes are not actually part of the new global visual language (GVL) that was announced in February, they are certainly stepping stones in that direction. As the GVL evolves we'll be looking to incorporate an increasing number of elements on the 成人论坛 homepage over time.
To fit the most popular links onto the navigation bar and allow for consistency across all 成人论坛 web sites, we kept the overall size down and as a result we removed the clock from the 成人论坛 Homepage header. However, during the public beta the feedback from many users was that the clock was sadly missed. So we've built a new and improved clock module which takes its time from the clock on your PC. The new module also shows you the time-zone that your clock is set to, and it can be collapsed to a slim-line clock. The new clock module makes use of upcoming HTML standards, which you can read more about at our 成人论坛 Web Developer blog.
The clock module is on the right hand side of the 成人论坛 homepage just below the Media Zone. If you prefer, you can remove it from your homepage by clicking the 'x' at the top right corner of the module.
During the homepage beta, we also introduced a new module called Topic Tracker. We learnt a lot from the feedback of users who tried out Topic Tracker during the homepage beta, and we think there are a few improvements we still need to make before we launch Topic Tracker on the main homepage for all users. However, if you are interested in trying it for yourself, Topic Tracker is available in the 'Customise Panel'.
To add the Topic Tracker module to your 成人论坛 homepage go to 'Customise this page' panel at the bottom of the homepage, tick the checkbox for Topic Tracker, and hit 'Save'. The module will appear in the top left hand corner of the homepage, and you can move the module on the page by simply grabbing the top of the module and dragging to another location.
We've made lots of other changes and improvements to the homepage, and the new platform will allow us to continue to deliver new features and improvements more quickly and easily. To learn more about the new 成人论坛 homepage, check out the Frequently Asked Questions.

When hovering over the 'title bar' of a module that uses background colour, such as the clock module and the C成人论坛/CBeebies module, the bottom two corners of the module contain white pixels which should not be there (tested in Firefox and Chrome).
The second bug is really just an omission - the 'Listen Live' links in the radio module do not open in a smaller new window as they should, instead loading the miniature radio players in the main window. Hopefully this can be fixed soon!

2) When you hover over the subheading, the mouse cursor changes to the hand symbol. To me, that means that it is a clickable hyperlink. I was clicking on at and patiently waiting for something to happen. It took me a while to work out that you have to click on the main picture.

But maybe it was broken for some users - the 成人论坛's website has to suit so many visitors that it's gotta be extremely difficult to please all of the people all of the time!
Just a couple of points I've noticed from reading the comments:
> I agree it's odd not to be able to click on subject headings on the right of the headline box... but I assume it's because the site has been built to allow multiple links/multiple stories per headline. So you click on the subject on the right (right now it's "David Cameron moves into No. 10") and then in the main box you get 3 stories all under that headline ("The Tory-Lib Dem coalition", "The David Cameron story", "Live coverage online"), so you can pick to go to the right one. It's only in the case of one of the right hand side headlines (at the moment) that there's only one link in the main box.
Perhaps a way around this would be that hovering over the headlines on the right changes the main content, but that clicking on the right headlines takes you to whatever story has been selected as the primary/leading article out of the 3 linked.
> I agree that trying to be facebook and saying "1 minute ago" etc. does just show up if a news story is a bit old, haha! Barnabas Palfrey - the time might be referring to when it was last edited, rather than added. But this (I should think) would be relatively simple to update to just the time it was created.
> I think it's an increasingly important point that people at their desks are getting wider and wider monitors... and people out and about are getting smaller and smaller ones! I browse the web on a widescreen monitor, a netbook and an iphone. So I think the comments about the useful content being too far down the page may need to be considered.
who_he - I'd say making the site variable width would be a nightmare with the fact that you can move things around. The widgets are fixed width (so it would be opening another can of worms to change them), and if they kept the same widgets in 3 columns - but just variable width, you'd have loads of white space. People would make their home pages look really odd and then blame the 成人论坛!
> abulkasam - If you're having browser issues, try pressing F5 or Ctrl+F on your keyboard a few times to see if the stylesheet from the old site is cached. (You could well have done that already though - apologies if you have.)
Ideally visit the stylesheet and do the same: / (just look at the source code and visit anything with .css on the end!)

Having 500 posts per page is far too much.
Rendering a page with 500 comments slows the browsers down and some take so long you think the browser has crashed.
Don't your web designers know anything about reducing time retrieving data from the backend database, rendering the data on the web server and sending it all down the wire to the browser?
I think you should reduce the number of comments down to 100 per page or even 50.
That will speed up the rendering of the page by retrieving less data from the database, less overhead on the database not having to retrieve 500 records, but also less data is sent to the browser making the web page more responsive.

1) Main stories on the home page - i can't click through from the 3 intros, instead we have to move across to the larger image on the left? this is confusing, and initially i thought my internet wasn't responding! until i realised it wasn't a link - please fix this
2) the clock - i love the clock on all the pages. not sure on the reasons behind linking it to my computer clock as i've never known that show the right time in a month of sundays. can't you link it to the atomic clock?

You have moved the bar higher again and I congratulate you. The site, to my mind, is comprehensive, clear, very cutting edge and most importantly user friendly. Obviously you will get the odd gripes about people not liking the new site because of "change" but I think the changes have been quite subtle visually since the last new site (so gloriously plagiarised by a certain Irish political party ;-). Keep it up, and congrats to the team

What is the point of the navigation bar at the top? It just takes up space unnecessarily. All of these pages are already available from the main body of the page and also from the 'Explore The 成人论坛' pane at the bottom (which is far more useful).
Could the main banner be made deselectable from the 'Customise This Page' tab? Although some people may like this feature, myself, and I suspect a large number of others, just find it annoying. Again, this just takes up space. Who decides which topics it covers. It seems to me that the 成人论坛 is trying to manipulate peoples browsing.
Why do you nearly always use unflattering or embarrassing pictures of people in the news, this is typical tabloid reporting and must be deeply insulting to the people concerned.
It seems to me that the changes hace been made for changes sake and to justify the cost of your web design department. I don't know how much this has cost but it is hard to see any justification for it - the majority of users seemed to be happy with the original version.
The time and effort would be better utilised in proof reading the pages (especially the recipes which are strewn with mistakes).

I'd just like to add my voice to those clamouring for the removal of the misleading "X minutes/hours ago" info. Was it included just to fill the space beside the pictures? I'd rather have smaller pictures and one more illustrated headline per widget.
I'd also like the TV widget to be more flexible. At the moment the edit function doesn't do anything other than link me to "set my location", which feels like a bug - it's certainly not what I'd expect it to do. In particular:
- I would like the ability to remove the "on now" section of the TV widget. For me, this really gets in the way.
- It would also be nice (but less vital) if I could vary the number of programmes in the "on tonight" section, in the same way as I can vary the number of "top stories" in other widgets.
Finally, and contrary to some other comments, please do not even think about making the home page wider. There are still a great many 4x3 format screens out there, including almost all in the workplace. Also, many of the older members of your audience will be set up so that the image fills the full width of the screen, to make it easier to read. You must not disenfranchise them - your fastest-growing market!
