Delta Goodrem - 'In This Life'

Delta GoodremDuring a discussion of this song with Steve ChartBlog, it took me TEN MINUTES to remember the name of the song Delta has stolen the chorus out of, in order to make this maturepop masterpiece. I knew it straight away, it's one of Beyonce's best moments, and it's the one where she sings about someone moving out of her house by putting all of their belongings "to the left, to the left". But for the life of me I couldn't remember the title.

I was thinking 'Indispensible', 'Unmemorable', 'Non-refundable'...and then when I DID remember 'Irreplaceable', suddenly it seemed like a very grammatically correct word to use for the title for a song by Beyonce. Or to put it another way, it seemed like a 10 dollar word in a 1 dollar lyric. Steve was very entertained by it, and, to make matters even worse, uttered the one expression which strikes fear into the soul of any music writer: "You're not allowed to go musically senile on me yet, y'know."

To which the only appropriate answer is "WHO ARE YOU? I DON'T LIVE HERE. WHERE'S MY MUM? HELP!"

She really has nicked the chorus tho. Like wholesale. But it's OK, cos it's been welded into one of those enormous pop productions like they used to give to Natalie Imbruglia, and it kind of sweeps you up in its dramatic wake, shows you the view from the rooftops, and gently wafts you back down again with a hug and a little kiss on the top of the head.

Delta's voice seems to have undergone a massive transition too, from pained balladeer to moo-ing earth mother. That's definitely going to be a bone of contention for some people, as is the fact that there's something a little bit impersonal about the sound here. You can't really tell that it's Delta, it could be anyone.

Mind you, that could just be me again. Who are all these people? I WANNA GO HOME!

I think your losing it a bit! Irreplaceable was on the chart for what seemed like years. (The non-refundable comment made me laugh)

I agree with you, it doesn't sound like her voice at all. Ive not heard this song before and I wouldn't have been able to tell it was her.

Have you been listening to the same In This Life and the same Irreplaceable? Because they sound nothing alike in my head.

I doesn't remind me of irreplacable either. Even though I hated Irreplacable I understood why other people found it "catchy". I can't say the same for Delta's new song, it's too poppy, boring, over dramatic, fake and doesn't stand out. I reckon it won't even make the charts, she doesn't seem to have many fans in the UK and if I remember correctly then her last album didn't sell well.

I don't know what she's done to her voice. It's like she's trying to sound like Alanis Morrisette. It seems forced and unnatural. I'm really disappointed. What happened to songs like, born to try, innocent eyes, out of the blue and the analyst? She has got talent and a good voice, it's shame most of her songs are boring.

Oh and did anyone else think that was Natascha Beddingfield on the picture above? It doesn't look like Delta at all.
