Interview - "Hello, Editors...Russell Speaking..."
Traditionally pop stars have to have done some rubbish jobs before they get their big break. And by rubbish jobs, I don't mean being a spear-carrying extra in a stage school production of Julius Ceasar, or having to sing backing vocals in a boyband instead of lead vocals. I mean doing a job which has absolutely nothing to do with music, which drains would-be creative types of their ability to create, and which makes the people who do it have to sit for hours in uncomfortable clothing, in close proximity to people they actively dislike, and (worst of all) having to be nice to the general public for hours on end.
So when I found out that two members of indie doom-aticians Editors used to work in a call centre, fielding no end of inquiries from grumpy punters all the livelong day and wishing they were anywhere else...well I had to find out more. So, a call was put in, and before you know it, I had the band's bassist Russell Leetch on the blower, ready to spill the beans...
What I Expected: The eternal angst and Kafka-esque inner turmoil of working for the rat race. A bit like that song by the Enemy, only with less "oh WAY oh WAY oh"-ing...
What I Did Not Expect: The mental image of the band preparing for their usual moody performances by listening to 'Sussudio' by Phil Collins. That's almost too much for one brain to take....

Here's the video for 'The Racing Rats', which is sort of about going to work (possibly in a call centre), isn't it?
