Elbow

Look at these men. Seriously, have a really good look at them. Now, while you're sitting there in your Joe Lean skinny jeans, tattered converse and Misfits teesh, can you really, hand on heart, tell me that these men look like the saviours of indie music? No you can't. And that's because they are not the saviours of indie music, they are FAR more important than that.

These baggy-faced tramp-alikes are the mighty Elbow, a band who could have been genetically bred for rabid cult success, were it not a lot easier to just let them develop like fungus in wet grass. None of which is intended to be in any way disrespectful to the boys in the band (it does read like that, I agree, but let's not linger on these fine details), it merely serves to prove that in music, bigger is not always better.

So, with this idea in mind, I approached Pete, the band's chatterbox bass-player, to talk life as a much loved - but not over-exposed - musical institution, and to discuss the bands and singers who he feels deserves a bigger bite of the chart tart.

PeteWhat I Expected: A certain stoicism from these indie veterans. I mean you don't get to keep a band going with your old schoolmates for the best part of 10 years without learning a few survival tips here and there. Also some solidarity with their un-celebrated rocking brethren.
What I Did Not Expect: Well the first band he named was a bit of a surprise, I must say...how to get to Ali G and Westlife, go via the Elbow...that fizzy feeling when a new album really TAKES OFF...oh, and neither the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳, Radio 1, ChartBlog or Elbow endorse the use of drugs in any way, not even for publicity purposes...
