Paramore - 'That's What You Get'
Well, what a wild ride we've had out of this lot since their second album was released, eh? There was the whole "is emo misogynist?" ruckus - a point which Against Me! made in Kerrang! only the other week, by the way - then we had the situation which absolutely no-one was calling "Hayleylujah-gate". After that, there was the "what on Earth is 'CrushCrushCrush' all about?" conundrum, and then, right in the middle of the "hey, 'Misery Business' is out again, why?" situation, the band damn near split up. And then we did an interview with them.
And now they've got a new single out, from the SAME ALBUM!
So, after that hurricane of stuff and attention, is there any point talking about this song? Surely anyone who is going to be won over by Paramore is already listening to 'Riot!' while applying their eye-liner? Are there really that many people out there who have failed to be won over by the other three singles, only to be swept into rabid fandom by one listen to this song?
That said, there's a clear reason for the band to want to get some product in the shops right now. They did very nearly call it a day, after all. It makes total sense for them to come out and prove that they've overcome adversity and they're back, matier than ever and still rocking hard.
Cue one extremely matey video, where the band gang about, smiling, enjoying their own company, and one hard-rocking song. Well, sort of hard-rocking.
Paramore's sense of dynamics has always been strong, and the introduction to this song is a great example of that. What's interesting about the verses is that they've taken a funk/disco type of groove, and then shifted the drums half a bar back, so the beat acts against what the rest of the band are doing. That takes some nerve, and proves there's more to them than a fiery lead singer a great big row about a three letter word.
Lord knows what will have happened by the time their NEXT single comes out...

It's as if they feel some kind of obligation to the band. They could probably release the birdie song and the fans would argue there was some kind of artistry behind it.
