Lily Allen - 'Not Fair'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 11:29 UK time, Wednesday, 15 April 2009

Lily AllenWhat's that, Lily? Are you dissatisfied with something again? Why, that's not like you, chipper soul that you are. I mean sure, you've sung about taking revenge on former boyfriends for being spineless and rubbish, you've criticised your brother for being a slob, you've mocked London for being a cruel place, even in bright sunshine, and you've called out the entire media for being obsessed with trivial things, but that doesn't make you a moaner, does it? Not with a pretty smile like yours, and those cheery pop melodies.

I notice that this time around, it's another boyfriend who's getting the patented Lily smackdown. Apparently, despite being perfect in almost every other respect, his lack of generosity in the bedroom is bad enough to cause feelings of frustration in the wee small hours. This will never do, as young Lily has needs which must be met, and is not shy about speaking up in pretty country-pop form, with full backing vocals and twanging geetar.

(. Took me AGES to find a clean version!)

And, in case you think Lil's entire pop career is just a way to settle old scores - a kind of blog-pop, or blop, if you like - you can also take this song as a stern warning to all would-be love gods. No matter how saucy you claim to be, no matter how potent you believe that you are, if you fail to put your performance where your mouth is (try not to think too much about that sentence, you'll have nightmares), someone is going to write a hoedown about you, and that's really going to sting.

Mind you, if I had to pick someone to slag me off in song, it would be Lily every time. Eminem would be scary and graphic, Beyonce would have to widen it out to include all men, and Britney would ask her producers to make it all about her instead (with the emphasis on how she is totally hot right now, and in control, and all that stuff about her life becoming erratic and scary no longer being a problem, and if I'm to appear in the song at all, it's as someone who cries himself to sleep every night because I will never meet her).

Plus, moany or not, it really is a very pretty song. Take note, Mr Morrissey!

You just pretty much admitted to crying yourself to sleep coz you'll never meet britney, that speaks volumes!
& maybe justifies all your pedantic wierd blogs, because i for one, get you a bit more now :P

Kudos for not really attempting to fault Lily Allen. Its a crackin' song.
The dig at dull Morrissey was much appreciated.

I'll have you know I HAVE met Britney, at Top of the Pops, no less.

She was new to pop at the time, and has possibly no memory of it ever happening, so don't bother checking with her, but it did happen.

    PRICELESS !

OK I know why you removed it.... I was just stating a fact....

GOOD SONG.... GREAT VIDEO.... is that better ?

  • Comment number 6.

I bet she'd be much more fun to meet nowadays than when she was squeaky clean!

I like how this blog's been hijacked by Britney - Well done her!

I don't really like this song if I'm honest. It's a bit monotonous! The video's a bit boring too...

    Been there done that.

Lily is frankly fantastic. The thing is that the charachters hat she paints in her songs (the ones that she plays especially) are so realistic to people we all know that it adds something of brilliance that your standard Beyonce/Britney/Katy Perry track just can't ever achieve.

She makes fun of her own gloriously. We all know women who claim that they want sense of humour, loyalty and sensitivity above all else but in reality wouldn't ever look at a guy who is overweight and give him a chance let alone tolerate one who has problems in bed. It's the perfect antidote to the rubbish girl-power nonsense that we seem to get awashed with.

Just you keep doing your thing Lily, your doing just great.

Thats why music is great.... I LIKE the LILY and the BRITNEY song... they are both good pop singles with interesting lyrics although LILY co wrote hers , whereas BRITNEY has a team to write it for her.

Although it must be said that LILY'S record company postponed the release of THE FEAR and her album, BECAUSE KATY PERRY'S I KISSED A GIRL captivated the nation and became a NUMBER 1 SALES AND AIRPLAY HIT.. and it would have distracted from LILY'S comeback.

A very shrewd move, as after the furore of KATY'S arrival died down... LILY cameback with A NUMBER ONE SINGLE AND ALBUM in a relatively clear field.... as the albums of BRITNEY, KATY AND PINK had been released a lot earlier.

There is a lot of strategy in raising an artists profile at just the right time and keeping it there for as long as possible with the strongest possible material......... LILYS TEAM did a fantastic job !

I am just wondering if BRITNEY'S MEETING FRASER on TOP OF THE POPS........... somehow led to one of them later displaying strange behaviours......

    interesting......... lol lol

I have also met Christina Aguilera, pre-Dirrty, and Billie Piper just before she quit being a pop star and took up with Chris Evans.

    Draw your own conclusions, people...

PS: Spiggy, I've already written about the Britney song, twice. Look

PPS: What I said was that IF Britney was commissioned to slag me off in song form, she would get her producers to INVENT the idea that my entire life was ruined by a lack of personal contact between us, whether that is true or not.

PPPS: Don't ask. I'm not saying.

All the way back in JANUARY ..... I was away on business and missed it.... it sounded like fun and encouraged lively debate....... still I am sure in the coming weeks there will be more controversy for all of us to discuss...

One more thing.... the playlist was released yesterday and EMPIRE OF THE SUN "WE ARE THE PEOPLE " and FRANKMUSIK "BETTER OFF AS TWO " currently do not feature ... why is this ?

Despite being very cynical about her comback, I have found myself a massive LILY ALLEN (spot the satire here) convert. I borrowed the album off a housemate because I was bored and was surprised to find It's simply fantastic. The Fear was a brilliant track and I was thoroughly expecting (half hoping, to prove I was right) the rest of the album to be rubbish. How wrong I was.

This track is nowhere near the best on the album, but its a good head turner and works as a follow up to The Fear.

And Dannyboy, I never remember a squeeky clean Lily Allen!

ps my name is SPIRIT and THIS is how I wish to be known.

    thank you

    SPIRIT

  • Comment number 14.

    That's your real name? Blimey.

So Spirit is your middle name then?

  • Comment number 15.

Daniel's my real name. But, I think you maybe knew that.

Liam, I meant a squeaky clean Britney. She was preened with Hollywood Soap!

  • Comment number 16.

My real name is Steven. Again - possibly not that surprising.

I think I must have listened to this song about 30 times in the past 24 hours. I honestly can't ever imagine getting tired of Lily singing the most scornful (not to mention rude) things in that butter-wouldn't-melt voice. Though I really have to stop miming a hoedown to this song when I'm listening to it on my headphones in public.
