Tinie Tempah - 'Frisky'

Tinie Tempah

Before we get started, just WHAT is "I don't even wanna kiss her" supposed to mean? It he a bit OCD about oral hygiene? Is it just a way of saying you're so full of animal lust you're all BANGBANGBANG and then off to the shower, bad boy style? And if so, is that hot, girls?

Are you bragging to your mates, claiming such intense sexual magnetism that you don't even have to bother with such girly fripperies as the snog, because those crazy girls are so besotted they'll do whatever you demand, and thank you afterwards?

Cos doesn't that make Tinie the hip hop equivalent of Jay from The Inbetweeners? Y'know, massively cocksure about his prowess, obsessed with his loverman status, until faced with an actual real girl, and then something of a wet nelly in the end.

(. It's literally cryptic.)

I should state, it's probably impossible to write a song about feeling randy on a night out without it seeming a little cocksure, a smidge self-regarding, and possibly an ENTIRE TRUCKFUL of arrogant. It's a feeling we've all had, right? That internal monologue that says you could definitely spend some quality time with anyone you like, because you are the bee's knees, the cat's meow, the hippopotamus's toothpaste. LOOK. OUT. WORLD.

At least Tinie is making a gag out of it all. His silverly, snakey flow is the acme of seductive silliness, something to giggle along to, rather than huff over. Certainly that "lala laa laa, lalala FRISKY" refrain is on the right side of ridiculous (ie ALL OVER IT), so it's hard to take too seriously.

And he's even brought Labrinth along to add some squeals and wails, when things get a bit rowdy. Always good to have a wing-man, especially if things are going to get a bit Pendulum at the end.

(Fraser McAlpine)

"It's catchy as hell with an overloaded synth-hop beat that perfectly blends with Tempah's vocals."

"Tinie Tempah will probably get another No.1.........but doesn't his voice sound annoying???"

"Tinie's producer Labrinth lays down some rather amazing breaks. Having that said, 'Frisky' is an obvious rehash of 'Pass Out'."

Would you risk it for a chocolate biscuit?

  • Comment number 2.

This song sounds riskily similar to 'Pass Out', even the structure of the music and verses are almost identical.

That said, once you get over the ridiculously harsh-sounding "Yeaaaah"s at the beginning, the synths arrive and so does the beat, which tell you something big's going to happen.

But it doesn't, Tinie's raps have practically the same rhythm pattern that 'Pass Out's but with different lyrics. The only thing that makes this song is, as Fraser so kindly pointed out, the "Ooh la-la laa laa,
    FRISKY!" hook.

And the lyrics are pretty degrading of women - "Would you risk it for a chocolate biscuit?" and "I won't even miss her when I'm done with her". Hmmm... I'm wondering why on earth songs like 'LoveGame' received stunted airplay yet this has been A-Listed.

Anyhoo, I'll give it 3 stars.

I think we have to conclude that Mr. Tempah may well be a one trick pony. 2 Stars

  • Comment number 4.

Just because they're similar genres of song I thought I'd ask what people's thoughts on Big Boi's (from Outkast) new single Shutterbug, I love it and hope that with the right amount of airplay it could be a massive hit. Top 10 me hopes.

    Tinie Tempah - Frisky

This song could almost be the younger brother , in the shadow of "Pass Out "
There are many similarities and Frisky will no doubt benefit from the formers number 1 success , despite not possessing the pop power ,in yer face hooks or impact of Tinie's breakthrough hit.

Having said that it's "A" listed at Radio 1 , is another dancefloor corker ,and has enough arrogance , verve and production touches , to make it irrestible to some , as we come into the Summer season.

This should make the top 10 , but the question in my head is , would this song have got to number 1 , if it was released before Pass Out ?

Now there is a random enigma .

    Everything about this screams terrible.
The lyrics= Awful, seems like he's just picked out random pairs of rhyming sentences and stuck them in.
His "rapping"= awful, never changes his style/rhythm throughout.

Plus it sounds just like pass out, which was equally as bad.

Hope it flops, but I doubt it will.

  • Comment number 7.

I won't say his raps were random pairs of rhyming sentences so much on this one. but 'Pass Out' was truly awful.

    "I guess I'll never get a fly on a Concorde/
I've been Southampton but I've never been to Scunthorpe/
I go crazy when the chicks call me 'John Thorpe'"

    NEXT!

That, along with "I got so many clothes I keeps 'em at ma Aunt's house", is the worst lyric in the song.

Returning attetion to 'Frisky', we all his finest lyrical moment will forever be remembered as "Would you risk it for a chocolate biscuit?"

Oh, Tinie! I certainly would. I don't know what exactly I'd be risking, but for a chocolate biscuit? Hell yeah, count me in.

  • Comment number 9.

The line is actually "I'm crazy with the kicks call me jean-claude" kicks = trainers, it's a pretty clever line

  • Comment number 10.

Apologies, it may be a clever line in itslef, but singing it amongst lines about planes and scunthorpe, it makes little sense and gives the impression he did a Liam Gallagher and went on the 'If it rymes, shove it in' route.

  • Comment number 11.

Yeah I agree that the lyrics lack cohesion and are a bit anarchic but in my opionion it suits the theme of the song as he was talking about drinking until you pass out, I'd like to think his nonsensical lyrics reflect the way you feel when intoxicated... Or maybe I'm overthinking it :) It doesn't really matter though, it's a good track and it makes me smile when I hear it, can't ask for much more!

  • Comment number 12.

Well I'm glad it makes someone happy, Olorin!

And forgive my earlier rudeness and allow me to welcome you to the ChartBlog forum thingy we got going 'ere.

  • Comment number 13.

There's nothing to forgive, thank you for the gracious welcome, it seems like a cool place!

  • Comment number 14.

best song from tinie tempah so far, this one should have definitely been released before pass out.

  • Comment number 15.

Can anyone else hear the Michael Jackson sample from the Smooth Criminal video in the album version of Frisky at 03:20?

  • Comment number 16.

Michael Jackson sample or not, this song is at #1 on downloads already, has been since 9am this morning. And after all David Guetta's hard work!

  • Comment number 17.

Ha Oddone , have you read my second from last paragraph at comment 5 ?

"Would this song have got to number 1 if it was released before Pass Out ? "

Way ahead of ya buddy !

    :) :)

  • Comment number 18.

    Darn it!
