Chipmunk

I know, I know, we weren't expecting this: we weren't expecting a new Chipmunk single quite yet, we weren't expecting him to throw it out there with minimal fanfare and we weren't expecting it to be as stark and brutal as it is.

That's brutal in comparison to, say, 'Oopsy Daisy' obv. Sweary as this is, Chippy has not suddenly become Zack De La Rocha overnight.

What he has done is throw down to anyone who wants to tell him he's not hard enough for the game, by releasing a song which is a punky sneer over a minimal backing of handclaps, piano, some grunting, bit of bass, bit of ticky-tock snare and a gang choir backing him up with the "ayy" and the "ohh".

This Chipmunk is becoming a tiger. Hear him roar!

(Actually you can't hear him roar, because he is swearing. Bad Chipmunktiger, in your bed!)

And that sing-song delivery has gone too. Where once the Chipster adopted that Kanye rising/falling inflection, he's now all asthmatic drama, wheezy and urgent. And deadly serious, even when he's spitting nonsense about being sexually attractive to lesbians. A claim which possibly reflects badly on him, if you think about it.

Now, I know what he means when he says "I'm stacking my cheddar, I've never been better". I know it means "I'm raking in the cash, because of my astonishingness, business acumen and whatnot".

But it still SOUNDS like "I'm stacking my cheddar", doesn't it?

You'd have to say it's not the best slang in the world if it can take a boast about someone doing brilliantly well, and leave you with the mental image of Chippy, on his knees beside what looks like an organic Lego castle made of cheese.

And it might just be me, but it does rather undermine the idea that he's a fantastically fantastic and grown up magnetic powerhouse of talent and sexual attraction.

I mean yes, if he asked me, I would definitely go and see his cheese castle - if only to see how he did the tricky battlements - but I would think twice about sticking around afterwards. Plus OMG the SMELL! There's not enough Issey Miyake in the WORLD to beat that.

"I'm happy to hear the young rapper deviating from his recent bubblegum pop releases."

"A step in the right direction musically I think."
