Home Time: The Army

Post categories:

Hello. Home Time Episode Two is on tonight, in which Gaynor's friends continue to smother her in help.

The entire series was filmed in Coventry, except for the scenes set at CovConClad, Becky's workplace - we had to go to Royal Leamington Spa to find an industrial estate.

There's no dedicated film studio in Coventry, so our elegant and hardworking production manager Lyndsay White found us a Territorial Army base, just off the central ring road.

Clean Hands Before EatingThe TA were very accommodating, especially considering that they could have shot us or tank-rammed us at will. We had our studio in their vehicle maintenance depot. This had the advantage of some very good safety posters about washing your hands properly before grappling sandwiches (see right) and not squirting compressed air into the arse of other people.

Sage advice.

Our catering was set up in their drill hall, and sometimes 20 or so soldiers would stand neatly in formation and watch me finish my pudding. It's the nearest I'll ever come to being in the army, due to my asthma and fear.

I've got to know Coventry pretty well, even before filming. Emma showed me the haunts of her youth: Cov baths, playgrounds, the Godiva statue, the lower precinct, Carey's Irish Bar. It's a great City. The accent's sneakily un-Brummy, the Memorial Park café serves an excellent caramel slice and there's a big, round, well-used covered market. Best of all is the armless, leering, Peeping Tom in the Cathedral Lanes shopping centre.

But anyway, right, here's the original of Gaynor's tattoo, scrawled by me, improved by Emma and then adapted by the properly beautiful Lesley Hamon, our make-up designer:

Dove TattooEmma refused to get an actual tattoo of it done, even though I promised I'd get 'Cov Crew 96' done on my face at the same time.

Neil Edmond wrote Home Time with Emma Fryer, who plays Gaynor.

The series continues tonight at 10pm on ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Two. Read more about Home Time on the Comedy Blog and watch a clip on Comedy Extra.
