Martin Simpson on Levon Helm & Hedy West
Martin Simpson writes:
Having listened to last week in the car, I spent much of the weekend being demolition and re-build man at home.
My road manager, Terry, and I achieved lots to the accompaniment of 's recent CD, 'Electric Dirt'.
This is a very fine record, produced by who plays superb acoustic and electric guitars, fiddle and mandolin, whilst Levon drums and sings quite unlike a man who has battled throat cancer.
My most played album of late was sparked by Topic Record's 70th birthday celebrations.
I've been listening to 's great, 1967 album, 'Ballads' and enjoying it more than ever - which I find remarkable as I wore one copy out because I liked it so much.
I realise how much of an influence that particular LP has been and how many tracks I've done versions of. I think I'm about to do two more!
In the 70s, Hedy made a record for Fontana called 'Serves 'Em Fine', accompanied by and amongst others.
On Yazoo Records' great 78 reissues series is a release called 'Hard Times Come Again No More', wherein can be found the original version of 'Serves 'Em Fine', and it's very much worth hearing along with the rest of the tracks.
It all keeps me happy.
