On-line tools

Graham Smith | 10:14 UK time, Friday, 25 February 2011

The "census tick-box issue" is one of many which these days attracts on-line campaigns; so many that I can't keep up with them all. Until yesterday I had never heard of the Pledge Bank, a way of recording on-line your sentiment in favour of this or against that.

Needless to say there was a . It had set a deadline of 1st January to collect 1,000 names. Among the 639 names which the Pledge Bank did record, I notice "inbred product," "Complete Sad Arse" and "Oh my GOD...get over it!!! YOU'RE NOT A COUNTRY!!!" This latter entry appears twice.

I'm sure many of the 639 names are real people - I assume Julian German, Graeme Hicks and Scott Mann are the same people who also serve as Cornwall councillors. Interestingly, Mebyon Kernow leader Dick Cole doesn't appear to have signed up.

You do have to wonder about the effectiveness of on-line tools such as the Pledge Bank. I can't see it making much progress in Libya at the moment.

There's also a Facebook group entitled ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ News Appreciation Society which says that: "Here is the group where all may congregate and contribute as to how incredible the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ News is - The best on earth." - Surprisingly [sic] there are only 84 members of this one. It's amazing what you can 'prove' with Facebook sites isn't it?

If Cornish nationalism is such a "fringe topic" you don't half spend a lot of time talking about it.

Is it really such a minor topic, in which case you're giving it disproportionate coverage, breaking ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ guidelines, or is it really a much bigger part of wider Cornish politics and society than you're willing to admit?

If someone believes they are Cornish and there’s an opportunity to make a mark saying this, good for them, but this action does not make them more Cornish, or the Cornish person who decides not to make a mark less Cornish.

You cannot beat being relaxed in what you are and who you are, those who feel the need to explain, there must be a tinge of shallowness IMO.
