My Turkish Grand Prix moments

Post categories:

Murray Walker | 14:10 UK time, Tuesday, 9 June 2009

The 2009 Turkish GP was another brilliant day for Brawn's Jenson Button who drove superbly to secure a sixth win in seven races so far this season - in fact his dominace is starting to remind me of the mighty McLarens back in 1988... here's my look back at the Istanbul action.

    Dear Murray,
As always, a great video with great comments.
    The eternal question is, however......
Will you be commentating at Siverstone?

    yours, a fan

    Hi Murray,

Thanks for the brilliant video! I won't be at Silverstone this year but I'm hoping that I'll be able to see you on telly sometime throughout the weekend.

    Hi Murray,

Your last sentence seems to suggest you will be at Silverstone.
Is there a chance you can be with the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ and put in a guest commentary appearance?

I would love to hear the go go go just one last time and all the other catch phrases from over the years.

  • Comment number 4.

Like so many others, I think the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳'s coverage of F1 this year is FAAAAAANTASTIC!!! Murray, your blog is a must-see part of that coverage and it's a pleasure to watch. So many viewers are coming back to F1 as the word gets round about the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳'s coverage, it's really enjoyable.

For my money, David Coulthard is the ace in the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ pack so far.

I'd like to add my voice to the clamour for Murray At Silverstone!!!

  • Comment number 5.

Good to have your views Murray and glad you're keeping well. I'll see you down the Augustus John for a pint after Silverstone to celebrate another Button victory!

  • Comment number 6.

I love the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ analysis, the presentation team are great value. DC provides the cool reasoned opinion and Eddie Jordan is an entertainer!

F1 still hasn't been the same since Murray left the commentary box though. Childhood memories still remain of climbing out of a warm bed in the early hours to watch the Japanese GP every year. His commentary on the legendary Senna v Prost duels at Suzuka brings tears to the eyes!

  • Comment number 7.

There is only two things, I would like to see and hear at Silverstone.
    1. Button Win And 2. And most Important Your Voice Murray, making a CLASSIC LINE,The last Winner at the last GB GP at silverstone is a Bristsh Driver.

  • Comment number 8.

This year's F1 has got to be the dullest since 2002 when Schmacher was so dominant.
Well done Max & Bernie all you've done is substitute one two horse race with another but with far inferior drivers. Vettel is the only top four driver that could ever deserve to be World Champion based upon talent.

Being overseas I only get the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ race commentary so I can't comment of DC and EJ's work but please get rid of Leggard. He's appalling!

Button winning the British GP would be a good send off for Silverstone, if Bernie gets his way it'll be the last GP in Britain.

  • Comment number 9.

Not sure why there's a clip of Mansell in an Indycar in here?

  • Comment number 10.

    Murray,

You are an absolute legend and the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ has to honour you with a spot of commentary over the Silverstone weekend. I'm looking forward to an eye-watering send-off at the home of Grand Prix racing!

  • Comment number 11.

I'm going to be at silverstone for the first time this year, it should be incredible! The last couple of years have been great for british formula one and I take great exception to those moaning about it being "boring".

And having Murray as a guest commentator at silverstone for one last time would be amazing to say the least!!

    Come on Button!

  • Comment number 12.

Please commentate at the British GP Murray it would be faaantastic :)

  • Comment number 13.

    Hi Murray.

Just want to add my voice to what is already a chorus of support for you to commentate at Silverstone. I've nothing against Jonathan, but surely it'd be possible to make room for one more during this ONE race?

Fingers (and everything else) crossed, James.

  • Comment number 14.

    You are the man Murray!

I am going to the whole silverstone weekend for the first and last time! I simply cannot wait for Button to win!

Murray you are the one and only Granddad of F1!

  • Comment number 15.

Is their any way us expats can listen to what Murray has to say, or do the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ think we are all spies and that Murray's thoughts are classified information?

  • Comment number 16.

    Interesting? Not one bit!

  • Comment number 17.

It is curious that with the British GP on the horizon there is no mention of Lewis Hamilton at all. last year there was no mention of Jenson Button. How fickle the british public are.
And I am sorry to say it has become boring. Last year it was at least a two horse race. This year it's only a race for the minor places.

  • Comment number 18.

#15 ... nothing to do with the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳, I would guess. The Beeb will have territorial rights to cover Formula One only within the UK, therefore they have to restrict their online videos likewise.

The football blog comments are full of similar complaints when overseas users cannot view some of the video content therein for the same reason.

Also, not sure whether it is still the case but in the past, you were not even allowed to listen to FiveLive's Champions League commentaries on the web because the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ didn't have the correct rights to do so.

  • Comment number 19.

    Dear Wanstronian,
the Indycar is amongst a bunch of other potential 2010 entrants, it's a LOLA duh!
Great stuff Murray, as ever, Terrrriffic (makes a change from Fantastic).
    Cheers

    Hi Murray,

    My question to you is:

as and when it gets to the race in which Jenson Button could possibly win the championship, being a legend in the sport yourself and of course British, would you consider making a guest appearance for commentary on the bbc for the major celebration that might be Jenson being crowned Champion?

I do hope you grant this wish as i think it would be just fitting for all 3 parties, Yourself, Jenson and the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ as all are british.

    your a legend Murray.

Thanks for a br-r-rilliant contribution to the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ team this year Murray! Your blogs are a must-see part of the Grand Prix weekend!

We want you back in the commentary box though! What a fitting tribute that would be to the memory of Silverstone and the British Grand Prix! We know you want too.....:)

  • Comment number 23.

Thanks for telling everyone it's not boring!!!!

  • Comment number 24.

Thanks your great review, as always.

Please say you'll be in the commentary box for the weekend, if only for the qualifying, or even with the 5-live team with the coverage of practice. You are the definitive motorsports commentator and it'd be fantastic to hear you behind the mic, even if it were for one night only as it were.

  • Comment number 25.

I agree Murray, not really boring at all. But oh dear the commentary is! Brundle does a fine job as usual, but that Legard chap has a problem. Hes turning F1 into the Button Show!
If Legards approach continues then the season (which, unless by some miraculous turn of events gets kicked sideways, is undoubtedly & rightfully Jensons) definitely will become boring to the vast majority of us F1 aficionados.
Honestly, listening to Legard repeatedly mentioning Buttons name, lap after lap (yeah, ok, now somebody replies thats because Jenson, our hero, always IS at THE FRONT! well, boo hoo, if so, why do we have to be reminded all the time then?), showering him with whatever praise he can muster, referring to the most meagre of his steering movements as some form of Herculean task, is becoming a trifle irritating. Especially when, if any other driver has the misfortune of not being in the remnants of Buttons slip stream, or crashing, or being lapped by him, theyll not be mentioned by Legard, or probably anyone else working for the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ at all.
The season could get very boring if this goes on.

You guys at the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ could do something about it, though.
More information about the other teams during the race & have chat with Legard chap & tell him to drop the amateur dramatics about Button.
    Simples, right?

  • Comment number 26.

    Dear Murray,
Just thought I'd let you know...I just won a thriller on the Jerez circuit beating Williams No.1 on the final corner of the final lap having to come in with 5 laps to go to mend damage to my Ferrari (Michael Schumacher) on a full race circuit with flags, refuelling, variable weather etc. on the Formula 1 '97 Playstation.
I couldn't have done it without the help of the Murray/Brundle commentary.

Listen to your fans Murray. Your Country Needs You (to commentate at the last British Grand Prix to be held at Silverstone).

  • Comment number 27.

You can paint the same scene in a thousand colours in an effort to brighten things up but it was still a boring race. The most interesting bits apart from the start of the race were far and few in between. Even the checquered flag was an anti-climax although the Brits would disagree. Lets face it when viewers start switching channels you know you got a problem. What we need is to have Murray Walker back in the commentary. Miss James Hunt too. But the Walker/Brundle team wasn't bad at all.

  • Comment number 28.

DC is great, showing the same level of insight as Brundle, the ultimate F1 oracle. Such a shame Legard has to shout banal, obvious comments, such as "Button makes a move" when the red lights go out!

Jake is also great, relaxed and informed.

As for EJ, I thought the only point scorers were on the track, can't let anything go, particularly with DC. He should slow down and be more considered. Jake threw it to him after the Monaco race and he delivered a stream of random words, worse than Mark Blundell, and I liked him!

Great that ex F1 drivers are more intelligent than ex fotballers. Yeah, the Gaffer gave me the car, you know, came first, you know, like, you know, you know.

  • Comment number 29.

    i dont like legard!!!!!!!

  • Comment number 30.

Murray, I have been watching F1 for about 20yrs (I am 33). As I was growing up, I did not think of having kids too much but there were a couple of things that made me look forward to when I might have kids. Being from South East England, Concorde would often fly over and no matter where I was everyone would stop and watch until it was out of site and I would imagine picking up my boy, pointing and explaining that that plane went faster than sound. Alas Concorde retired before my first came along. My oldest is four now and we sit on a Sat/Sun and I am teaching him all about F1 and he likes the white cars with the yellow wheels and knows Lewis's car/helmet combo.....and likes the red ones too (doh!). It would make our British GP weekend if I could sit with him and explain that the voice he is hearing is the greatest commentator that F1 has ever had and he could experience F1 like I did. Just once.

  • Comment number 31.

    #30 Great post - agreed.

  • Comment number 32.

Just adding another call for Murray to commentate at Silverstone.
    Go! Go! Go!

  • Comment number 33.

I take my hat off to the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ coverage so far. Brundle and DC are great to listen to. The blogs are great and Eddie Jordan adds his 2 cents of value.

However, I have been thinking about this season with regards to what it stands for. This may seem like waffle but please hear me out.

In the past F1 was all about the making the fastest car possible with a driver that could handle it and push it to the maximum. Take Hamilton's win last year. He had a fantastic car no doubt, however, experts rightly point out that the Ferrari was a better car with a great driver in the making of Massa. Hamilton rightly took the Championship becuase he was the best driver (in my opinion).

I also think Massa, Raikonnen and Alonso, with Vettel as future star could deservedly take the Championship.

Now Button has been fortunate. Ecclestone has taken on a warped form of Formula 1 socialism. He has tried to knock everyone down to the lowest possible common denominator (i.e. terrible cars) and see who wins. Buttons car is way ahead of the others but not those of last year. I don't believe he is a deserving Championship driver, just read about his antics off the track and compare to the ever-focused Hamilton, Massa and Alonso.

Buttons Championship win will be hollow and a result of external decisions in F1 and not through battling with other drivers in the great races. Now, I am not saying I am not happy for Button, if someone was going to win an F1 in a dodgy season I want it to be a Brit. But the last time someone had this kind of margin in performance was back in the Schumacher hey days. Are we comparing Button with this type of legend?

When the teams eventually even out and get up to speed we will see who the best driver is, I hope it's Button or Hamilton but this season will soon be forgotten.
