Turkey is locking itself out of the EU. France and Austria among others will be pleased. They will say it is showing its true colors as an Islamic nation whose lack of free speech is alien to Europe. Let's not inconveniently remind Mr. Sarkozy that his predecessor Jacques Chirac told governments seeking accesssion to the EU just before the invasion of Iraq that if they openly opposed his policies, he would personally see to it that they didn't get in. Freedom of speech can only be allowed to go so far.

Much though I disagree with Dawkins on matters ranging from Theism to Romanadvoratrelundar, I am on his side in this case. It would be far better if Turkish clerics took time to set up a website answering Dawkins, point-by-point. (And by clerics, I include both Muslims and Christians (and others, as well...) Free Speech is an important right, and allowing people like Dawkins is a small price to pay.

I hope everyone is aware that the guy who called for the ban is upset because Richard exposed how daft his book was. Many of the illustrations had been lifted from other publications without permission, and then captioned incorrectly. One picture that had been labelled as an insect was actually a fishermans lure!

Who is persecuting who in Turkey? Secular military, Muslim majority. It's getting very difficult to keep up.
