You wait ages for some disability awards and then ...
... two come along at once.
We're getting into 'awards season' now the year is closing. Last night was a particularly busy night for awards with a disability theme.
We'll start with the Cultural Diversity Networks inaugural awards ceremony at Channel 4's Horseferry Road offices in central London. The evening was hosted by comedian Alan Carr - not averse to a bit of diversity himself - and amongst the winners were ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Storyville's rockumentary about learnie punk band Heavyload (Met Film Ltd, HI8US) under the 'Excellence in creative output - diverse content' category.
Listen to an interview and live performance from them, originally featured on our talk show while they were filming.

Over at BAFTA were the 2009 Mind Mental Health Media Awards hosted by comedian Shappi Khorsandi. Huge congratulations to OUCH! contributor Seaneen Molloy for her factual drama 'Do's and don'ts for the mentally interesting' (³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Radio 4) based on her almost legendary and perhaps way too honest blog.
Amongst the other winners were: ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Newsnight, Alastair Campbell's documentary 'Cracking Up' (part of the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Headroom campaign). And big soap EastEnders received the prestigious 'Making a Difference' award. A list of all the winners can be found on

About awards ceremonies though. DOn't get me started. I find it really annoying for the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Sports Personality that some of the Paralympic grade athletes, sorry I mean specifically cycling and swimming cos they're the only ones I watch regularly. Anyway they achieve amazing things, for example Sarah Storey broke her own cycling track world record for the 3K pursuit, and Heather Frederiksen is constantly churning out new world records, yet never do you see any paralympians nominated for the awards.
I know Ellie Simmonds won the YP Sports Personality last year, and she is a mate of mine and I was weel pleased for her, but that is it.
It just gets so frustrating sometimes cos nobody seems to acknowledge these achievements for how fantastic they really are!
Sorry, rant over now.
