Woman's Hour interviews Deaf novelist Louise Stern

On today's Woman's Hour Jane Garvey interviewed deaf US novelist Louise Stern through an ASL interpreter.

Louise was there to promote Chattering, her recently published collection of short stories, each one dealing with a different aspect of communication.

We hear Louise discussing the funnier side of deafness and the quirks of communicating with hearing people. But more than that, it's a unique piece of radio which is well worth a listen. She can be heard signing and at points, laughing out loud, but every word she says is conveyed verbally by a male interpreter.

It is absolutely amazing deaf people are able to write isn't it......? it might catch on the UK...you never know.

That's an interesting comment MM - is it rhetoric? (sarcasm perhaps?) The reason Jane has such well developed language skills including writing are due I suspect to her being 4th generation deaf and therefore well educated through having a language from a very early age and growing up in a deaf family. So many deaf people are born to hearing parents who cannot give them the necessary grounding in having a shared langugage necessary for proper language development.
