For the first time, we're going to try a competition on the blog. As newsletter subscribers already know, a copy of Pervez Musharraf's memoir has arrived on my desk. If you'd like to win it, (the book, not the desk), simply tell us who your FAVOURITE Pervez is, and why. Post your entry on the blog, along with an indication of whether you'd like the book to be signed. It won't be signed by Mr Musharraf, but we could perhaps get Lissa to scribble on it, or I could do it myself.

My favourite Pervez is Ali Pervez (www.umarketu.com) mainly because he has a winning smile.

My favourite Pervez is the LA cop who was discovered carrying out his hobby as a Peeping Tom outside a friend's house. He lived a few streets away and had been doing this for weeks before he was caught peering through her bedroom window and depositing DNA. Gross gross gross.
.........oh.......you didn't mean perve! Oh well. Brain in the gutter as usual. Signatures from you and the team would just make my day!
My favourite Pervez is Pervez Hoodbhoy, a professor of physics at Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, because (a) boys with hoods generally get a bad press & (b) he wrote after 9/11 "If the world is to be spared what future historians might call the "century of terror," we will have to chart a course between US imperial arrogance and Islamic religious fanaticism. Through these waters, we must steer by a distant star toward a democratic, humanistic and secular future. Otherwise, shipwreck is certain." I think that was just before the first ship hit the rocks.
I'd obviously like the book to be autographed by Eric Muir or Eddie.
My favourite Pervez has to be Ahmad Pervez. Who could forget his seminal work:

As a physicist myself, having someone writing on "Islam and Science: Religious Orthodoxy and the Battle for Rationality" is always welcome. He has done significant work to popularise Physics in his homeland of Pakistan, again, somsthing that is necessary and should be praised.
He should be recognised, both for this and his work on women's rights.
OK, so I only found out about him from your competition, and I am not sure that this is really what you were looking for, but I would like to assure you that Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy is definitely my favourite Pervez - I am now off to hunt down his book to add to my new collection of "books by people called Pervez", which I hope you will be adding to!

Pervez Aloysius - discoverer of treacle mines in Lancing, Sussex. b 1829 d 1901. The mines collapased soon after the discovery and no-one believed his story. He lived a quiet life in Melbourne, Derbyshire after that, and refused to speak about the mines until, on his deathbed, he gave his son, Bob, a map. Bob Aloysius didn't believe him either and used the map as bedding for his chickens.

I don't particularly have a favourite Pervez, I much prefer a mature Stilton or crumbly Cheshire.
However if you are pushing me, and I feel that you are then I would plump for Ali Pervez - his book regarding empowering people on how to effectively use the tools of marketing to improve their life will be a great asset, especially signed by yourself Eddie.
By the way, did you know he also has a car rental business in Burton on Trent that specialises in German vehicles www.pervez.co.uk .
My favourite Pervez is Naseem, whose website (naseem.4t.com) includes nice photos of cities in France and Spain. What's more, he has probably never been threatened with virtual extinction by a National Leader.
Cherie Blair could sign it, it would go well with the Hutton Report.
Peter Pervez of TV's Blue Peter and Kick-Start fame. He also appeared in an early Dr Who where he was strangled. Wrote many impressive Blue Peter Annuals.
Good friend of John Noakez
My favourite Pervez is the cricketer Pervez Mir. A player in the mid seventies, his was a career of spectacular non achievement.
A middle-order batsman and fast-medium opening, he was picked as an allrounder in the 1975 World Cup squad where he played in Pakistan's first two matches. He was recalled for one match against England during their 1977-78 tour. But that was it!
In England he had successful careers on the County circuit - in 1975 he joined Derbyshire, playing one match, and in 1979 was on the books at Glamorgan where, again, he played once.
Without a doubt my favourite Pervez.

I'd like to nominate someone who may well be a distant relative of Eddie's*. Myt other reasons for nominating? - Not only does he have excellent form on the pitch, but he has such a broad range of experience, both in these Isles and elsewhere, that I think he deserves the accolade.

Well, this is all very googlepredictable I must say.
My nomination is Pervez Sajjad who played 19 Tests for Pakistan as a cunning left-arm legspinner whose forte was that he was effective even on unhelpful tracks. In all, he took 59 economical wickets, including five wickets in an innings three times, always against New Zealand. At Auckland in 1964-65 he finished with 5 for 42. In the 1969-70 series, he took 22 wickets at only 15.63, including 5 for 33 at Karachi and his Test-best 7 for 74 at Lahore.
But only because no one else googled that far.

My favourite is definitely Pervez Hussein who made a video of himself with his guide dog to help educate the Muslim community in Birmingham about the value of guide dogs - apparently some of them felt it was unIslamic to use one. I'm sure no man has ever made a greater contribution to cross-cultural understanding. If only he taken advice from Ali Pervez, his video would be a bestseller by now.
I'd like my book signed by that reporter chappie who fearlessly borrowed the editor's bike to bring us a classic PM dispatch (so memorable, I've forgotten his name). And by Dr M, of course.

I'm new to this PM blog lark, having resisted Eddie's daily attempts to lure people in by claiming it's all utter nonsense; while much of it is, methinks he doth protest too much.
Anyway, I certainly didn't expect to be given the chance to win prizes as I thought that sort of stuff was restricted to commercial radio, so I'm even more in thrall to this blog than I imagined.
My favourite Pervez has to be Peter Pervez, late of Blue Peter, Kick Start and that dog show programme. I admire him because, despite being totally over-shadowed by John Noakes, for many years, he never allowed his bitterness to show on screen - what a pro!
If I win this prize, I'd like to offer a new prize for the PM bloggers, a mint copy of Rudolph Giuliani's book, Leadership, which I was given by my boss during a training course. I've never read it, but I don't imagine I'll read Mr Musharraf's book either.
I'll sign it, too.

He's a wonderful man. According to the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace website, "The key to understanding Pervez Musharraf is this: He is so sure of his own good will and altruism that he fails to see how others could doubt him. "I know it sounds arrogant," he told me. "It sounds arrogant to me when I say it. But I think I am the only person who can make sure that true democracy takes root and is allowed to function without being pulled down."
So there you have it. How can you argue with that?

My favorite Pervez is police support worker Pervez Hussain from Hereford. He鈥檚 been helping to launch the 75th anniversary year of the first guide dog partnerships in the UK.
Pervez joined the West Mercia Police force in 1989 as a telephonist when he still had his sight. As it decreased, he didn鈥檛 want to learn Braille and 鈥渓ook different鈥, so he memorised 700 extension numbers. He's now a Diversity Officer for West Mercia police
His guide dog is called Grant the Golden Retriever.

re PERVEZ & POSTCARDS
Well I don't know about the Pervez challenge but I've already pre-judged the early entrants to the postcard competition and I think the winner should be Tony Wheeler.
Why? Because his postcard was from Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel where my husband and I went on holiday in sunny June. (Sting and Trudie Styler were there you know).
Hopefully I'll manage to post the photos of the postcards tomorrow but I'm supposed to be editing PM so I might not have time. (I know it's a bit basic to photograph the postcards but I can't think of another way of getting them online unless the Today programme will lend me their scanner).
Meanwhile my battle with 成人论坛 bureaucracy goes on to try and get an easy way to post audio clips to keep Eddie amused.

I'm sorry we have obviously not comprehended the total awfulness of your working conditions and the paucity of equipment with whihc you have to work.
You cannot think of another way to get the postcards up 'UNLESS THE TODAY PROGRAM WILL LEND ME THEIR SCANNER'.
Que? I should think just about all the loyal PM bloggers have a scanner of their own and you're telling us that the PM program doesn't have one? Good grief, you can get them for about a hundred quid.
Heaven forfend (and I'm sure Valery and the rest of the gang would agree with the use of our favourite phrase there) that we should moan about the millions spent on various 'entertainers' who pop up on TV causing a significant proportion of the population to immediately switch off their sets but surely to goodness somewhere in the vast 成人论坛 budget there must be a spare hundred notes to get a program like PM a scanner of its own. If not we might have to organise a whip round.
BTW to whoever did the choccie run, thanks for the picnic AND for not putting it in the fridge. It was very nice to relax with when we came back from entertaining the visitors; we had a lovely day but gosh - I'm not used to talking all day anymore. I'm shattered.

Having seen the photos of the office, I doubt they'd have anywhere to put a scanner. I imagine the Today Programme to much neater, and they'd have a special desk for "Ancilliary Office Transducers".
And I know from experience that taking digital photos of pictures and uploading etc is actually ever-so-very-slightly easier than scanning them in, really.

My favourite Pervez would have to be that exclusive emporium Fortnum & Mason, pervez of the finest quality comestibles. Someone gave me some of their rose petal jam once -it was pure magic.
Just realised probably shouldn't mention their name on the 成人论坛, (commercial - but seems to be ok to give Mr Musharraf free advertising for his book which I didn't know he'd written) So the name of my favourite Pervez is F*rtn*m & M*s*n, which now looks vaguely sinister.
