Competition

Eddie Mair | 12:47 UK time, Wednesday, 27 September 2006

For the first time, we're going to try a competition on the blog. As newsletter subscribers already know, a copy of Pervez Musharraf's memoir has arrived on my desk. If you'd like to win it, (the book, not the desk), simply tell us who your FAVOURITE Pervez is, and why. Post your entry on the blog, along with an indication of whether you'd like the book to be signed. It won't be signed by Mr Musharraf, but we could perhaps get Lissa to scribble on it, or I could do it myself.

Anyway, do your best. The future is yours etc.

.........oh.......you didn't mean perve! Oh well. Brain in the gutter as usual. Signatures from you and the team would just make my day!

My favourite Pervez is Pervez Hoodbhoy, a professor of physics at Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, because (a) boys with hoods generally get a bad press & (b) he wrote after 9/11 "If the world is to be spared what future historians might call the "century of terror," we will have to chart a course between US imperial arrogance and Islamic religious fanaticism. Through these waters, we must steer by a distant star toward a democratic, humanistic and secular future. Otherwise, shipwreck is certain." I think that was just before the first ship hit the rocks.

I'd obviously like the book to be autographed by Eric Muir or Eddie.

He should be recognised, both for this and his work on women's rights.

OK, so I only found out about him from your competition, and I am not sure that this is really what you were looking for, but I would like to assure you that Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy is definitely my favourite Pervez - I am now off to hunt down his book to add to my new collection of "books by people called Pervez", which I hope you will be adding to!

My favourite Pervez has to be Peter Pervez, late of Blue Peter, Kick Start and that dog show programme. I admire him because, despite being totally over-shadowed by John Noakes, for many years, he never allowed his bitterness to show on screen - what a pro!

If I win this prize, I'd like to offer a new prize for the PM bloggers, a mint copy of Rudolph Giuliani's book, Leadership, which I was given by my boss during a training course. I've never read it, but I don't imagine I'll read Mr Musharraf's book either.

Heaven forfend (and I'm sure Valery and the rest of the gang would agree with the use of our favourite phrase there) that we should moan about the millions spent on various 'entertainers' who pop up on TV causing a significant proportion of the population to immediately switch off their sets but surely to goodness somewhere in the vast 成人论坛 budget there must be a spare hundred notes to get a program like PM a scanner of its own. If not we might have to organise a whip round.

Re 44 Whisht - I'm in kinks here; how extremely hilarious!

I wish I could think of something equally as funny, but I can't so there we are.

All this talk of postcards and holidays makes me want to go somewhere nice for a few days... hey ho, never mind.

Btw AndyC--gg, I have signed up for notification of the postcard book, and the lassie I emailed asked where I'd heard of their website. I told her it was you, hope that's ok?? Umm, don't know what I'll do if you say No...

Having seen the photos of the office, I doubt they'd have anywhere to put a scanner. I imagine the Today Programme to much neater, and they'd have a special desk for "Ancilliary Office Transducers".

And I know from experience that taking digital photos of pictures and uploading etc is actually ever-so-very-slightly easier than scanning them in, really.

Thanks much for the good word (blush), O Ms Lissa Supremo (Supremess? Supremette?), if you can find my entry amongst all these good'uns on this blog (er, try around SB11).

Chris the Pickle : that's excellent news, I don't mind in the least at all.

Every now and then you find a lovely website with a lovely idea and lovely people behind it (I don't know them personally, except through emails) that you can't help but try to spread the word.

So I've done something useful, that's twice today. Wow.

Jim - 68 - que?, you'd rather he sent the book to me?

Glad you got the picnic Anne, I ate all my chocolate raisins and didn't want any tea..:O(
I know what you mean about the talking all day thing, visitors, while welcome, are hard work. You know the old saying "visitors are like fish, they stink after 24 hours". Ummm, maybe I've just dealt meself a quiet few months, oops.

    Lissa,

I'm amazed that PM cannot afford a 拢50 scanner (being the cost of a medium quality one)... and that Today are so mean about the use of it's *one*. Are you saying Eddie cannot stand up to John H?

Sequin, as a PM presenter and blogger, when you're on duty on Today, come to our aid, scan in the postcards for Lissa, when no-one's looking. Or maybe Seegreen can help.

Of course Eddie can stand up to Humphrys! - It's just too early in the morning for him to catch him, and we all know that the Today team lock the office door when they leave.

My favourite Pervez would have to be that exclusive emporium Fortnum & Mason, pervez of the finest quality comestibles. Someone gave me some of their rose petal jam once -it was pure magic.
Just realised probably shouldn't mention their name on the 成人论坛, (commercial - but seems to be ok to give Mr Musharraf free advertising for his book which I didn't know he'd written) So the name of my favourite Pervez is F*rtn*m & M*s*n, which now looks vaguely sinister.
I'd love all the team to sign the book (the emphasis being "team" after all - left to Eddie the programme would probably be a gentle meander through the stranger avenues of his imaginings, quite forgetting any actual news. Hang on, that sounds quite fun really).

Oh help! Did anyone hear the stuff about exam boards cracking down on wholescale plagiarism from the internet in GCSE coursework? Do you think it's going to extend to PM blog competitions - 'cos if it is, we're stuffed!

Because this was the first posting to come up on Google.

I look forward to reading the great man's work.
