Eileen Donachie

Eileen Donachie

Actress: Deirdre Davis

Eileen Donachie is Shieldinch's resident ice-queen. Self-assured and forthright, Eileen just gets better with age or at least that's what she'll tell you. Eileen is clever and witty but there's a sharp edge to her tongue that tends to hurt anyone who comes into contact with her sooner or later. Eileen's problem isn't that she's wrong. In fact, nine times out of ten, her assessments of a person or situation are spot on. Where Eileen runs into difficulties is that she just gets peoples' backs up. In short, Eileen's problem is her personality.

Eileen can't be entirely blamed. Little sister to the softer and, some would say, more likeable Gina, Eileen has lived her whole life knowing that their father, Malcolm, prefers her sister. In order to protect herself Eileen has taken the attitude that it's everyone else who has the problem, not her. Eileen hasn't had her sorrows to seek when it comes to family. Her daughter, Kirsty, died in a car accident and son, Brian, faced time in the state hospital after he kidnapped step-sister, Hazel, and his granny died in a car crash caused by Brian. Eileen secretly feels a failure as a mother but it's a feeling she simply refuses to acknowledge.

Eileen has lived in Shieldinch her whole life. Her first marriage to Raymond was not a happy one but it did result in her two children, Brian and Kirsty. When Eileen remarried Tommy Donachie following her divorce from Raymond their new joint family seemed almost cursed from the beginning. First Eileen cheated on Tommy with old love, Lewis Cope. Shortly afterwards Tommy was killed by The Shieldinch Strangler.

Eileen hasn't had a proper, stable relationship since Tommy. Short flings with younger men have proved enough for now. Eileen has also "enjoyed" an affair with Gina's then husband, Archie. Eileen's world was thrown into turmoil when sister, Gina, involved her in Archie Buchanan's death. Eileen is a loyal sister and was dragged into Gina's world of trouble. Eileen stood by her sister until Gina started her relationship with Douglas. Eileen was proved right when Archie's memory returned and he was soon up to his old tricks. When Gina renounced him, her sister was right back by her side in support.

Eileen's romance with Alex Judd may have failed but it wasn't a total disaster. Eileen emerged from the ashes with a new purpose and political awareness. Eileen trounced Alex Judd in the community council elections and now represents Shieldinch and its residents in matters politic.

Single once more Eileen had been spending more and more time with old friend and ex-husband Raymond. When he decided to become a foster parent Eileen realised that it could give them both a second chance at being better parents. Nothing ever runs smoothly in Eileen's life though and she discovers she's pregnant after a spot of drunken fun with Raymond. She soon comes to the realisation that this could be her last chance at motherhood and accepts the situation.
