Fresh start ahead (22)

Swansea - With the crunch having come and gone, has the feeling of a fresh start about it.

Everything Wales have done since the Six Nations has been done with that Australia game in mind and of course we would have hoped to emerge victorious from it. However that wasn’t to be and now that the Plan A has been derailed, it’s time for us to crack on with Plan B.

The primary goal still remains a quarter-final berth and to get there as group runners-up we must first negotiate the challenges of the final two group games, starting with the .

As I have said previously in this blog, I do not foresee the game causing any problems for Wales if we play anywhere near to our full potential - and that remains the case. In fact, with the prospective quarter-final tie against in mind, it seems the schedule of Pool B could not have worked out better for Wales.

gave us the opportunity to settle in to the competition before the Australia match and, even though we fell short there, we now have the opportunity to recuperate from that loss and restore confidence by producing two emphatic performances to beat Japan and .

In saying that I do not want to sound presumptuous or show either nation less than the utmost respect.

Japan is one of the fastest growing rugby nations in the world and will come to Cardiff with nothing other than victory in mind. Should we underestimate them then we will get stung. But I know how the boys will prepare for this game and there'll be absolutely no complacency.

Wales will have a handful of players stepping onto the field for the first time in this, or any other, World Cup. They’ll be determined and eager, not just for this match but also the opportunity to stake a claim for a starting spot against Fiji following the failure against the Aussies and .

The Japanese will not be able to match the defensive organisation we showed in the last match and hopefully we can break the with more regularity earlier in the game this time round. In doing so, we can spark the up-tempo off-loading game that was so effective for the relative periods in the first two matches.

Shane WIlliams in action against Australia

I’m sure we can achieve this and, after an inevitable period of stubborn resistance from the Japanese, open the game up to play the way we can. I’m confident of this and although I don’t think we’ll be scaling the heights of we handed out to them in our last fixture I see Wales winning by a stretch.

Finally, following the responses to my last blog, there are a couple of matters I’d like to attend to.

Firstly, to Legga: I was aware of the young fella you refer to in your post and I can assure you the vomit-stained individual was not with me. I must say however that I thought his long-hair, to which you also refer, was nothing short of magnificent and, prior to his , he was great company.

Secondly, to Otto: you should never believe what ‘Dirty Dan from Aberfan’ says. He’s renowned in these parts as something of a Jackanory and his words are about as trustworthy as his failing eye-sight and his dodgy hearing.

To set the record straight, the song I was singing was and the alleged stuffed Wallaby under my arm was in fact my stuffed Osprey called Shane which I am never without! Ha-ha!

Thanks for you comments though and keep them coming.

C’mon Wales!

Ryan Jones plays number eight for Wales but misses the World Cup through injury.

Let's assume that we get past Japan and Fiji - do Wales have any hope of competing with South Africa? My heart says 'yes' but my head is telling me otherwise. England were terrible the other week against them, but South Africa were rather impressive!
The only way I see Wales beating South Africa is if the springboks have a poor game and Wales really go for it...

If you;re anything like me, when the cheesy songs come on you're up there blasting out hits such as Dolly's 9 till 5, a bit of Tiffany and Chesney and the best rock song ever.....Bon Jovi's Living on a Prayer!

Ryan, another great post – God you write well – and thanks for coming back to me on my comment. You are very polite about the little lad with long hair by the way, particularly considering the barracking he gave you. When he got up on the bar and sang that song about Yogi Bear… Anyway, I thought he was a bit of a doughnut myself. All in all it was a good day and I never thought I’d see Screech from Saved By the Bell and Noddy Holder having a beer together in Walkabout Cardiff. Who’d have thought it.

I can't see Japan or Fiji causing us problems, but SA . . . (groan!). One reason for my trepidation is that I'm still not sure what our best team is - and neither is the coach. One thing's for sure; against the Bokke our only hope is to play as we did against NZ and England in the last RWC, but maybe not quite so loose. Trying to mix it with them, or just kicking the ball to Percy M, Habana et al will be suicide. You should be there, Ryan.

Hmmm....it could have worked out a LOT better if we'd played for 80 minutes against Australia rather than 30, won the group, and then played England (or one of the south sea island teams, depending on results) in the quarters. South Africa look awesome. England look feeble. Who would you rather face in the quarters?

Dear Ryan, I feel I must now come forward and reveal myself as the mystery ‘short little fat lad with long hair’ who disgraced himself in Walkabout on Saturday. However, I do take exception to the description given by this ‘Legga’ character: While I have been sick over myself in Walkabout many times in the past - most famously during my good friend Macwaldo’s 21st birthday celebrations some years past - Saturday 15 September 2007 was not one such occasion. The only stain on my shirt was bow&black, caused during an ugly altercation between my posh mate Turner and 19-stone Tracy from Abercwmboi. Hope I’ve cleared that up and I’ll buy you a pint next time I see you and Shane out in town. Safe bro, Bazwaldo The Great.

You write some nice entries, Mr.Jones and it's a pleasure to read them. Keep it up. Hopefully you'll be back on the pitch with the boys, soon. I'll be watching the game from the glowering screen of my PC monitor in my tiny apartment in Yokohama, Japan. I'll be there (in spirit) when the boys walk out at 3:30am Tokyo time! Who knows, I may head out for the replay at 11pm the next day and show the Japanese how to sing (but no Chesney). Japan is steadily improving, year by year and it's a shame that the next World Cup didn't go to them. I'm hoping for a good game. I'm sure the brave Cherry Blossoms won't give up but I'm ready for some more fine winning ways from the boys in red. We all know how well we can play. C'mon, boys, we're all with you! Cymru am byth!

You are a gifted man. Can u explain why alleged
pro. rugby players have it? TWICE today!!
I am now, more than ever, convinced that the WRU
- if they had the brain to think of it - should convince
cajole or do whatever, to send ALL the up & coming
"wannabees " in Welsh rugby to the southern hemisphere
for at least one season where they will be exposed to the reality of modern rugby. It is tough, hard and they won't have all the privileges & glory/money for a year or so.
BUT - whern they return they will be the DB or fail.
Just an old man's rant .... but!!

Cool blog :-)

I would have preferred England in the QF - I personally think if Wales get past Fiji (convincingly) that the confidence will be up and England will still have their heads down after the SA game.
It was slightly alarming to see so many knock-ons during the Japan game though...hmm...being so adventurous is great to watch, unless you drop the ball :-P
Maybe we should play Mike Phillips again against Fiji - see how he does when there is slightly more pressure on and if he performs then throw him in against SA!
Always the eternal optimist when it comes to Wales I think we can beat Fiji by 30-40 points and give SA a real good test, maybe cause an upset!?

On the plus side, chances are we won't have to play the All Blacks 'til the final...or maybe that's wishful thinking. If Wales chuck the ball around tho, they might cause SA some problems- it worked a bit for Samoa anyway!

Thanks for your help with the first bit, but am now concerned I might not get my £15,820 if we don't beat the Boks.

Are you able to get to their hotel and slip them some of that special soup that they themselves gave the All Blacks in South Africa before the 1995 Final ?

If so, I'll cut you in for a tenner of my winnings ..!
