QUOTES OF THE DAY
- 23 Sep 06, 07:46 PM
K CLUB 鈥 Anyone not feeling just a tad revved up for Sunday鈥檚 singles?
YOU BET WE ARE. And that鈥檚 meant to include both sets of supporters.
Sure, Europe are in the hot seat, but we鈥檝e been here before, think Brookline 1999, and the Americans can halve the lead very quickly. And then anything can happen. Game on.
was sensational at the from a European perspective, topped by Paul Casey鈥檚 hole-in-one and Sergio Garcia鈥檚 fourth win.
And, as usual, there was some great chat behind the scenes. Here鈥檚 the quotes of the day:
David Howell: 鈥淣ice."
Paul Casey: 鈥淣ice, yeah, thank you Howeller. It鈥檚 unbelievable.鈥
The European pair are asked how it feels to win with a after Casey鈥檚 ace on the 14th downs Stewart Cink and Zach Johnson 5&4.
Casey: 鈥淚t [the repercussions of his ace] is going to be very expensive.鈥
Paul McGinley: 鈥淵ou can afford it after last week.鈥 (Casey won 拢1m in the World Match Play).
Paul Casey: "Woosie said to me that all the earlier guys had hit three iron."
Paul McGinley: "So did you listen to him?"
Paul Casey: "I did listen to him. It was a perfect four iron."
"I should caddie for someone. Make more money that way."
Ian Woosnam gets a bright idea after "clubbing" Paul Casey to his hole-in-one.
"I know where the ball is, that's safe. And there's a four-iron in my bag, though I haven't checked to see if it's mine."
Paul Casey reacted to his ace by throwing his club up in the air. Reports from the course had suggested a cheeky spectator ran off with it.
鈥淭here is not one iota of complacency here. We want to go out and win the singles to win all five sessions for the first time in Ryder Cup history.鈥
Colin Montgomerie warns that his side are taking nothing for granted.
鈥淭he most important thing is 10-6. That鈥檚 what鈥檚 in everyones鈥 head.鈥
Sergio Garcia, unbeaten in his last nine Ryder Cup matches, brushes off any individual adulation.
"I can tell you right now that our team does not feel this is over by any stretch of the imagination."
US captain Tom Lehman refuses to roll over despite the 10-6 scoreline.
鈥淭hat wasn鈥檛 the opening, that was it.鈥
Colin Montgomerie gives a long, and arguably eloquent summary of the match situation, its implications for tomorrow and its context in the history of the Ryder Cup, with specific examples and several personal testimonies to boot. Then press officer Scott Crockett thanks him for his opening remarks.
鈥淗e鈥檚 a short man, with a big heart.鈥
Sergio Garcia lavishes praise on team captain .
鈥淗e鈥檚 a very short man, very short, but he鈥檚 growing by the day.鈥
Colin Montgomerie interjects with his own views on Woosnam.
"We came here playing as a team and we're still playing as a team and that's how we intend to play tomorrow, as a team."
Ian Woosnam reveals the secret of Europe's success so far. (Though we musn't get carried away.)
"I think it will be. I think I'll retire after this. I'll need a year to recover anyway."
Ian Woosnam is asked whether winning the Ryder Cup as captain would be the highlight of his career.
鈥淲ho do you think talks the most? 鈥arcia would be quite a good guess.鈥
Robert Karlsson turns questioner when a hack quizzes him about the most vocal member of the European team.
鈥淗e鈥檚 a big heap of energy swirling about.鈥
Robert Karlsson describes .
鈥淗e鈥檚 young. I think that sums it up quite well.鈥
Jose Maria Olazabal also describes Sergio Garcia.
鈥淥h no, I think it鈥檚 great to be sitting here. It鈥檚 p***ing with rain out there.鈥
Darren Clarke denies he is disappointed not to be playing in the afternoon foursomes.
鈥淚n 1999 there were some players who made some putts.鈥
Jose Maria Olazabal refutes the suggestion that Europe make all the best putts, referring to his opponent Justin Leonard鈥檚 monster drainer which sparked the infamous scenes of celebration on the green as the Spaniard was waiting to putt at .
鈥淭he older you get, the better your memory gets.鈥
Darren Clarke joshes with Olazabal that he won鈥檛 let the incident at Brookline lie.
鈥淥ne and one makes three with them.鈥
Robert Karlsson praises the inspirational all-wildcard pairing of Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood, who beat Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk 3&2.
鈥淧eople said we were a gamble, but the people who were mostly sure it wasn鈥檛 a gamble was us.鈥
Darren Clarke on his selection as a wildcard with Lee Westwood.
鈥淗e is a one for the limelight isn鈥檛 he.鈥
Lee Westwood on Darren Clarke鈥檚 chip-in to win their match.
鈥淭hat was probably the loudest roar I鈥檝e ever heard on a golf course.鈥
Luke Donald on holing a birdie putt on 16 to go 2 up with two to play against Phil Mickelson and David Toms in the foursomes.
鈥淶ach Johnson鈥檚 just playing too well.鈥
Is that possible? Tom Lehman鈥檚 rookie was the star for his side on Saturday morning after firing seven birdies as he and Scott Verplank beat Henrik Stenson and Padraig Harrington 2&1.
鈥淗e was all-world.鈥
Whatever that means. Scott Verplank on Zach Johnson.
鈥淗e called me last night when I was asleep and said, 鈥楧ude, we鈥檙e playing鈥.鈥
Scott Verplank reveals how Zach Johnson got him fired up for their match.
鈥淎ll I did was rub massage oil on his back, give him water and pat his forehead.鈥
Scott Verplank again (he's actually quite funny), confessing that he didn鈥檛 play very well and just left it all to his partner.
鈥淚t was an emotional high and an emotional low.鈥
Zach Johnson reflects on his day after him and Stewart Cink were sunk by Casey鈥檚 ace in the afternoon.

How can they? They're lost! This my personal favourite.

All-World. In American sports parlance used to describe a performance better than the more common All-American level.
What odds would have been offered earlier in the week on hearing that describe a rookie over his more illustrious(or less blue collar) mates on Saturday?

Inspired team order from Woosie for tomorrow - can't wait! Monty leading from the front - shades of The Belfry 4 years ago (hopefully!). Closely followed by Garcia in case we need even more emotional support early on. And then Clarke tucked in at no 7 in the hope of a fairy tale winning-putt ending? (With McGinley close by to offer additional cover for the Irish fairy tale, and Dublin's other favourite son bringing up the rear just in case it goes to the wire!)
Given the strength in depth of the European team this year, the usual 'rules' of where to put the stongest players don't really apply - so let's go with the emotion and team spirit - but keep everything crossed, just in case.....

I notice that there is now no adverse comments from reporters about the quality of Woosnams captaincy. There never should have been any , he's doing a great job.

What a great performance so far, one more day keep it going.
But why oh why can people on the continent(I work in Germany)not listen to FIVE LIVE commentary due to "contractual reasons" and have to put up with a less than professional service on the official Ryder Cup page. Lets sort out this ridiculous situation.
When I am home in the UK, Iwould normally listen to such programmes on the radio and not the internet

Woosnam has put Harrington out in every game which surely is a favour to "old mates" rather than something based on performance. He is not a great captain, my grandmother who has never played golf could match that team. ( as long as i told her to make sure the Spanish guys were playing! ) He asked live on Sky what the score was yesterday after all games had finsihed. In a press conference he said he gave advice to Stenson when he was talkig about Karlsson. He has been following the matches where we were looking like clear winners and not the close ones. He dont know what he is doing but luckily, we have players good enough to ignore him.

Can someone clear something up please. I'm sure I read that Darren Clarke's course record was 60 but that can't be right. Getting close to that looks impossible even with a fourball.

10-6 to the Europeans. Since the disgusting scenes of 1999 has this been made up.
Maybe all Europeans should go over to America and not handle their drink and spit at their wives. Only then would we be giving them the same courtesy they showed us.
Or maybe on the other hand we could act dignified if we win and walk away with our heads held high.
I'll go for the later.

I was watching the highlights tonight and saw that the players agreed to let Karlsson play out of turn on the tenth (in the fourball).
OK - he missed the putt, but my confusion is this:
In agreeing to play out of turn in matchplay (rather than by mistake), were the players not in breach of rule 1-3 and therefore subject to disqualification? This would appear to be covered by Decision 1-3/1.

Watching the European side's enthusiastic play - smiles, bearhugs, joking around - has been pure pleasure for my family back in cool rainy Canada. My wife is from Spain so we are very proud of Garcy and Olly's play. Favourite moment? Clarke's chip in at 18 of course. Second favourite moment? Garcia jumping on Clarke's back as he was trying to drink a coffee.
Guys, keep it up. EVERYBODY want to see Darren raising the cup over his head tomorrow afternoon, don't we?

Well, sitting here in Pennsylvania, USA, I would have to say that Woosnam seems to be doing a heckuva job. He can laugh at himself too, a key leadership item it would seem.
Ypur team looks unbeatable now, but do not get complacent. Our guys will make a strong showing tomorrow, if only to avoid the embarrasment of the day ending early. At least, we hope they will.

Looking back , Zach should probably be grateful to Casey, for what could be viewed as a ' coup de grace ' . The end, when it came, was swift and merciful. Hope u got your drink from Casey too, Mr Hodgetts . What a moment in sports.

what u think, fellows ? I feel Casey's comment : " It is going to be very expensive ." should be voted as the QUOTE OF THE WEEK , if not the STATEMENT OF THE YEAR .

Here in the United States the debate on what went wrong has already begun. No-one can quite understand why the europeans can bond together and enjoy what they are doing. The U.S team seem far too serious and somewhat aloof. It's as though they'd rather be somewhere else, anywhere else. They just don't get it.
Here's a tip, pick an inspirational captain and players with character. Talent alone ain't enough.

Why do you have a link to ""complain" about this post"?
Serious question

You Euros had another spectacular day. Well played. Our thoughts are with Darren Clarke, who is performing like a champion under a most difficult situation.
Never has the golf world seen a hole in one conceded to the opponents. Was that 4 iron ace necessary? A halve with birdies or pars would have sufficed.
If the US has another Brookline comeback, I hope that we exhibit better manners.

Isn't this nicely set up for Darren Clarke to hole the winning putt? What a story that would be!

What a phenomenal reception for Monty on the first tee.
Chanting his name like a football crowd.
The *13th Man* is in good voice already.
Good luck to all involved.

Let's be frank here - the Americans are "fair weather" golfers that do not like Ireland's damp climate.
Tiger's face tells it all - he'd rather board a plane and go back to Florida to play.
How many famous golfers come from Seattle, Washington (damp climate like Ireland's)? Only Fred Couples if the Washington state website is correct.

Can someone ask the 成人论坛 to pronouce Padraig Harrington's name correctly?
He's not PADRick. In Ireland he's called POURick. You're dealing with a separate language (Irish) and the vowels are pronounced differently from English.

California John - you're clearly correct. My mistake. I was just too damn keen to get onto the last one, which tickled me.
Colum - the complain post is so you can, well, complain if you think any posts are offensive or illegal, that sort of thing.
Charles - I'm very keen to track Mr Casey down for that drink, but I suspect the security man at the K Club hotel might have other ideas about a hack strolling into the victory (fingers crossed) party.
Pete - Darren Clarke did indeed shoot 60 in the 1999 European Open.

They all have it wrong when you say Stenson holed the winning putt.
Stenson was already guaranteed ahalf point when he holed his putt to win his match.Meaning Donald's putt was for 14 and a half not 14.
What a day - what a team!
