I鈥檓 one of 成人论坛 Television鈥檚 rugby commentators. I come from Troon on the Ayrshire coast (south-west Scotland) but have lived in London for the past seven years - although I make frequent trips north to 鈥渧isit the family鈥 (play golf).
My grandfather J.L.Cotter played stand-off for Scotland in the 1930鈥檚, as far as I鈥檓 aware was the only minister to have pulled on the dark blue jersey.
My own international sporting recognition was far more limited, representing Scottish Schools at golf against England. Scotland lost.
I started commentating on rugby and golf on 成人论坛 Radio in 2000 before a Bosman-style free transfer to TV.

Andrew Cotter wonders if his grandfather was the only minister to have played for Scotland. I seem to recall that Chris Rae, who played centre for Scotland in the early 70s and went on to work for the 成人论坛 in various guises, was a divinity student, and therefore may have been a minister before going into broadcasting.

If you've ever been to a dinner where Chris Rae has spoken I think you can be fairly sure he has never been a minister!

You must be proud of your grandfather but I am sure that the great wing Eric Liddell in the 1920s was a minister of religion? Indeed this calling led him to China where he died in the "care" of the Japanese.
Coming more up to date it was nice to hear from my sister who is a teacher that Rob Dewey has donated his first 6 Nations jersey to his old school gamesmaster at Madras in St Andrews. No fanfare, PR fuss or bother - just a nice gesture of gratitude to someone important at the start of the road.
All the Scottish and Welsh lads had signed it too.

Hi Alan,
Who could forget Eric Liddell? But despite probably being the fastest wing ever to play for Scotland he had not been ordained as a minister at the time of his caps - that came later in 1932. I'm still claiming unique status for my grandfather!
Glad to hear about Rob Dewey's gesture. Speaking to him he seems like a very nice lad (strange description for someone of 17 stone). I hope that he gets a good run free of the injuries which have troubled him a bit over the past couple of years. Scotland needs him.

I can indeed confirm that following my maiden speech at the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland,which had them rolling in the aisles, I was considered to be unsuitable material for the ministry, and so was doomed to the hell and damnation of life as a broadcaster/journalist

Hi Andrew,
You missed probably the highlight of your sporting career....playing for the Glasgow University golf team! Congratulations on your career, I remember seeing you briefly a few years ago on tv and hearing you doing some of the commentary for a Scotland game in Italy and I thought....that name sounds familiar, where do i know it from and then it dawned on me that you were in your final year at GU and i had just started playing in the GU golf team....those were the days! Sadly some of us had to get "proper" jobs!!

I remember you well David - you were one of the players who arrived on the Glasgow team who was actually a proper player.
