About Mark Orlovac

I'm one of the team that helps look after the rugby union section on the website and on digital text & Ceefax on TV.
But just in case any of the bosses are looking, I do write other stuff as well...
Despite going to a rugby-dominated school, I never played regularly (to be honest I wasn’t good enough) but somewhere in my mind I have an image of myself as a dogged, sniping scrum-half – a bit like Gary Armstrong.
Unfortunately, five knee dislocations led to the premature end of my sporting career in 1997 although I am sure I will be living out my dreams through my two sons – all I am asking for are Scotland and Lions caps.
I started my journalistic career at a local newspaper in Teddington, covering the likes of Harlequins, London Irish, Richmond, London Scottish and London Welsh, before joining the Beeb in 2000.
Away from work, I am a drummer in a 50s jive band and my claim to fame is that my uncle invented hit 80s quiz show ‘Bullseye’ (my eldest son is the very proud owner of a bendy Bully and before you ask, I can’t get you one).

Hi Mark,
you may remember me working with you on that little local paper in Teddington.
I have been back in South Africa for six years now and am now Sports Editor of the Sunday Tribune in Durban (circulation about 120 000). Am meeting a couple of your colleagues later this week - Paul Waters and Lesley Ashmall - to discuss 2010 World Cup football.
Do you still keep in touch with Ashley and the gang?
drop me a line if you get the chance
kind regards
Simon

Mark,
Great blog. Your expectations of your two boys is not at all unreasonable. I wish them well, as long as they don't score the winning Grand Slam try at Croke Park.

Hey Mark. you might know me...........
I was the one you were placing bets with over the mobile network the day of the Ireland v England game. I was in a well frequented ale house overlooking the cauldron of thomond park, when a certain bottle of port was mentioned. If you decide not to pay up i will have to confiscate the "bendy bully" Chat soon my friend.

It's the Orlovac! And with the Beeb too! Last time I saw you was in Richmond in the heady days of Teddington and Egham.
If you want Australian citizenship, I'm your man. I now live Down Under - I married an Aussie - but look back on my time with you and the others fondly. Still in newspapers, a regional daily in the amusingly named Wagga Wagga.
Do you ever see Eric, Andy O or any of the others? Remember your roots, young man!

Hey Mark,
Its been years!!! How the hell are you? Congrats on having two boys!!
And if they don't play for Scotland I'm sure they'll at least know the words to the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond! If you are over in Dublin at all make sure you get contact!
Enjoyed your blog!!
