Dromore
The council by-election brought about by the rugby player Tyrone Howe's decision to resign from Banbridge Council is tomorrow. There are seven candidates in the field: Carol Black of the UUP, Helen Corry of the Greens, John Drake for the SDLP, Paul Gribben of Sinn Fein, David Griffin of Alliance, Keith Harbinson of the Traditional Unionist Voice and Paul Stewart of the DUP.
With the result due on Thursday there should be a fair degree of interest, not least because this will be the TUV's first electoral test.
Thanks to Nic Whyte's site, here is the last Dromore result from 2005.

Here's my prediction:
DUP 1150
UUP 550
TUV 300
SDLP 300
SF 200
All 100
Greens 75
The big story in this could be the UUP vote spliting between tuv and dup. It will be a shocker if the DUP don't win, the question is how well will TUV poll and does this result give allister any hope for retaining his MEP seat? A very low turnout at 25 - 30%.

Turnout is 38% in the by-election with just over 3600 votes cast out of an electorate of 9600.
Dromore Town around 36% with the rural area coming in at 40%.
This will give a quota of just over 1800.
This is an impressive turnout for a by-election that many including myself thought would be very low. Looking back at the 2000 by-election turnout was 37% so it appears voters have been energised to get out, as much as one can be for a by-election.
The reason for this motivation I believe is because of the TUV and DUP Battle. The core DUP vote is solid and despite forecasts of apathy has came out. My prediction on what the vote will be is:
DUP 1700
UUP 800
TUV400
SF 250
SDLP 200
All 150
Green 50

Think UUP 2005 total should read 1884 not 1184. Apparently turnout about 38% - slightly higher than average council by-election.
Now the result is in it is clear the DUP are going backwards. The TUV is a brand new party, but has come out of this with a very good result. If replicated across N. Ireland in a general or Assembly election the TUV could be a force to be reckoned with. There is deep unease among many in Unionist ranks, and those who are against the "Chucklevision" government have a party now to speak for them.
6 comments but only 2 published that can't be right. I tried to send one through yesterday but there seems to be some error. Anyway, the DUP involved itself in what can only be described as amateur attempts to discredit Jim Allister and in doing so only served to increase his profile. I see from the Newsletter that the MPs are off to discuss the future of the party perhaps they should discuss the future of those who ran this pathetic suicidal propoganda disaster.
