Sunshine and showers set to continue

Last week I was away filming for a new series of Weatherman Walking. I did part of a pilgrim's walk from Pontypridd to Llanwonno church and then went onto Penrhys.

The weather was varied with glorious sunshine one day but during our second walk in Newport, near , the waterproofs came in handy. In fact, the heavens opened with torrential rain and thunderstorms and we had to shelter under a bridge on the M4!

The mixed weather continued over the bank holiday weekend. After a dry start, Saturday turned wet with over 25mm of rain in places. Sunday was better but still with a few heavy showers. As expected, Monday was the best day with some lovely sunshine lifting temperatures to 18掳C.

Low pressure has brought more cloud and rain today but south-west Wales has fared better - drier and brighter with some sunshine and warmer too, with a high of 17掳C in Pembrey on the Carmarthenshire coast.

Tomorrow will start dull and damp in places with mist and patches of hill fog but during the day it will gradually brighten up. However, the sunshine will set off a few showers and if you catch one it could be heavy with thunder. Top temperatures will range from 12 to 17掳C with a light to moderate breeze.

Friday will be drier overall although a few showers are likely, most of them in the south and southwest with the odd heavy shower in places but where the sun breaks through it will feel quite warm; highs around 18掳C with just a light east or north-easterly breeze.

Forecast chart Saturday 31 May

The weekend will bring an improvement thanks to high pressure. An upper trough will trigger one or two sharp showers but most places should miss these and stay dry.

Some cloud is likely but the sun will break through at times and it will feel pleasantly warm with light winds and highs of 14 to 19掳C.
