Pete from Porthcawl's People in Planes shares his musical DNA with us - a trawl through some of the finest alt music that graced the 90's. People in Planes recent album 'Beyond the Horizon' is far, far better than its lack of attention in the UK media might have you believe. It's eloquent, anthemic rock, less introverted and self conscious than Elbow, but still big, mighty and worthy of a fist raised in the air. Their new single 'Pretty Buildings' is out now and is, according to my long-suffering wife, "...the best thing I've heard you play this year." She's not a big fan of Atomçk, I don't think.

Banda Bacana are a collective from Bangor whose music peregrinates from the Congo to Sierra Leone, taking in Trinidad and Ghana along the way. Their début album 'danza negra' (Joscyn Records) describes itself like this: "sax, percussion and sweet harmonies to make you smile and swing your hips." I'd say it's a worthy North Walean equivalent to the similarly broad-minded, rhythmic and cosmopolitan infusions of the multiheaded Quantic beast.

Huw Pooh reminds us of something old, Welsh and ace. Not for the first time (or the last) his trowel has been busy at the seam of New Wave singles that were laid down in South Wales in the aftermath of punk.

Soundhog counters the punk quotient by making an argument for ELO with something that, no doubt, would have Mr Gruff Rhys nodding along. Maybe.

Bethan Elfyn treats us to something twinkly from Tim and Sam's the Tim and Sam Band featuring Tim and Sam.
