So with Valentine's Day coming up, we wracked our brains, asked our Twitter followers and generally brainstormed for a dozen love songs from Wales that span genres, themes and feelings. And the resulting tunes really took us back in time.

Five are from the Nineties, four of which are from the 'indie' side of things.

Yes, even grizzled Newport rockers like 60ft Dolls did occasionally spread their wings to the romantic, and their song Hair is an affecting, heartfelt poem to a loved one's barnet. Is there anything purer?

Well, one of the oldest tracks on the list is Badfinger's Without You and it could sensibly be described as one of the world's best, and well-known love songs.

It's tinged with tragedy, of course, but it sold millions of records over the years, courtesy of Nilsson and Mariah Carey.

Another massive song - again selling millions - was Donna Lewis' I Love You Always Forever which in the summer of 1996 got to number one all over the world. The Cardiff singer never had another hit of the same scale, but this direct, simple song drills down to core elements of a love song.

Then we've included a couple from opposite ends of the musical spectrum: firstly Bryn Terfel's powerful but sensitive interpretation of the traditional Welsh song Cariad Cyntaf and secondly Goldie Lookin' Chain's You Knows I Loves You.

Now, if there was ever a song designed to leaven the schmaltz then this is it: a poem to a loved one being serenaded with cheap jewellery and trips to McDonald's. Now if that's not a romantic sentiment I don't know what is.
