Newport dance wunderkind Culprit 1 has branched out from his usual electronica with a remix of a compositon by Cardiff's own famed composer John Hardy, performed by the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ National Orchestra of Wales (³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ NOW). culprit-one-02_446.jpg

Commissioned, premièred and recorded by ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ NOW, Blue Letters was released in 2009 to much acclaim in the specialist classical music press. It was inspired by Hardy's mother's time as a young teacher overseeing mission schools in Africa.

Culprit 1's take on the piece retains the flowing, powerful drive of the original and marries it to a light beat and twisting filters that warp and distort the music to good effect.

He said, "I wanted to stay pretty faithful to the original tune as I liked it so much. I also liked the fact that the music had a personal resonance for John. He used "recordings of people whacking stuff like pipes and doors... samples of classic 808 and 909 machines and a bit of 'mouth percussion' for good measure" in his remix.
