Heading to Rheindahlen
- 3 Jul 06, 03:36 PM
DUSSELDORF - Ricco and I are driving to the British Army base at and will this evening run a mile for Sport Relief.
We have opted for this particular destination on the back of a suggestion by Penny - comment eight - who mentioned that her Dad used to race at a track near Monchengladbach when he was in the army.
I’m not sure if the track at Rhinedahlen is exactly the correct location - at one point or another there seems to have been a few bases in the area - but it seems the most likely.
Furthermore, I’m not sure if the efforts of Ricco and I will in any way resemble those of actual athletes but we’ll certainly give it a try and I reckon the point of Sport Relief is not about the speed in which you run the mile but the fact you actually get out and do it.
In truth a little bit of exercise will probably be a good thing after the mountains of meat that I have eaten over the last month, though I could have done without it being quite so hot for once.
It might also go some way to jolting us back into life after the disappointment of the weekend.
I feel a little flat today and I don’t think I’m on my own.
England fans slowly drifted out of the campsite we stayed at in Dortmund through Sunday and Monday morning.
The place looked a bit empty and sorry for itself as we left at lunchtime, the odd bag full of rubbish scattered here and there, the occasional improvised kickabout from the people that remained.
Very much a case of after the Lord Mayor’s show.
Anyhow, we’ll be filming our efforts at running a mile so look out for those and remember that it is all for a good cause so if you feel like getting involved when the actual mile run takes places on 15 July click .
There is a competition you can enter - click for more details - and you can also sponsor comedian , who is swimming the English Channel. Nutter.

I hope France humiliate Portugal in the semi's. A win should be a formality for them after Portugal’s toothless display against us, and nobody buys a free kick / penalty / sending off like Terry Henry!
Then I'd like a win for Germany in the final. The Germans were rooting for us on Saturday night FFS! Lets applaud their guts and determination when the chips are down, instead of despising them for having those qualities (in spades!) that we so tragically lack.
Oh, and for those idiots who persist in goose-stepping and singing about bomber Harris it’s worth remembering that if it hadn’t been for the Yanks and a particularly bad Russian winter in 1944 we might be celebrating a world cup winning team on July 9th …… as Germans!

A trip to an Army camp is just what the England football team needed to more fully prepare them for penalties, and a potential lack of discipline. Throw in a few thunder flashes on the run up to the spot and a rioutous gathering of squaddies, and somehow I feel England would have been better prepared for the proverbial conflict of shooting at the opposition's goalie. Add to that a boot camp, and they might even have held their cool a bit more. I guess it is too late now, but perhaps next time before they travel to Austria/Switzerland for Euro 2006 and South Africa for WC 2010, assuming we get there.
Perhaps you can ask your Army chums if they would be willing to entertain the Team, although I would leave it for a while. Anyone who might have earned a red card might be in for a tougher time.

I hope this thread continues in the vein of the above blogs from fletch and ricco, amiable fans who write genial travelblogs, put them on the site and then it just deteriorates from there, bitter english, rancorous celts, odious self-justifying portuguese all to the soundtrack of grinding axes! Thankfully there are enough friendly common sense bloggers trying to establish a friendly atmosphere, communicating experiences and views..they've been great to read and its what keeps me reading..to all those who hardly read the blog and just use it to vent their spleen/triumphalism and petty short-sighted pseudo nationalism, READ THE BLOG! Take a leaf from Fletch and Ricco's book for christ's sake!

Am sick and tired of people keeping on saying Rooney is young boy and all that. The man is just an idiot and has failed to channel his anger into football skills. Does he expect opponents to move out of the way everytime he has got the ball? Rooney really needs to see a Shrink before he throws a talent out of the window.
There are more young players who behave honourably e.g Lennon his team mate is level headed but much younger than him. Get your head fixed Rooney and stop blaming everyone for your stupidity.
