[Played by Nicholas Brendon]
Alexander LaVelle Harris, known universally as "Xander", is a bright student at Sunnydale High, but lacks application.
Xander has been close friends with Willow for most of their lives. He doesn’t realise that she is smitten with him and, in any case, is besotted with Buffy. Theirs is a doomed romance, since there’s only one man in Buffy’s life: Angel. He finally plucked up the courage to tell Buffy of his feelings (in 'Prophecy Girl') only to find that they were not reciprocated. Nevertheless, he remains fiercely loyal and protective, even though often it places him in danger. Their adventures together have tested Xander severely. Xander has matured considerably since meeting Buffy, and has grown in courage. Little of Xander’s home life has been revealed. Like Willow and Buffy he’s an only child, but one who isn’t close to his parents.
Xander has not had many romantic relationships, and most of them have ended badly, (his entanglement with Natalie French in 'Teacher’s Pet', for example). Following a long period of mutual animosity Xander and Cordelia began dating. Their sparky relationship ended when he was caught kissing Willow, (in 'Lover’s Walk').
In 'The Zeppo' Xander encountered Faith as he
tried to escape from Jack O’Toole and his zombie buddies, and ended up sleeping with her. He eventually had to admit this to the rest of the gang, greatly upsetting Willow.
An alternate-universe version of Xander appeared in 'The Wish'. In this universe Buffy had never come to Sunnydale and Xander, like Willow, had been turned into a vampire. The vampire Xander was staked by Buffy before Anyanka’s spell was broken and Sunnydale returned to normal.
Nicholas Brendon was born in Granada Hills, California as one half of a pair of identical twins. His first break came a guest role in the sitcom 'Dave’s World', which led to other small roles in 'The Young and the Restless', 'Married… With Children' and a pilot called 'Secret Lives'. His only film appearance was in the 1995 horror movie 'Children of the Corn III'.
