Anton Bruckner waited 20 years for the premiere of his Fifth Symphony, fell ill, missed the concert and then died without ever having heard it performed. From such shaky origins, the reputation of this monumental work has only grown throughout the years – and Australian conductor Simone Young, a Bruckner specialist whose 2015 recording garnered rave reviews across the board, should bring the very best from it here. Before she does, soprano Sally Matthews takes on the fivesong cycle of Mathilde Wesendonck poems composed by Richard Wagner, Bruckner’s musical idol.
