The true King of England

The man who claimed to be the true King of England is buried in a churchyard in Herefordshire. Anthony Hall claimed to be related to the illegitimate son of Henry VIII.

In the churchyard of St David's at Little Dewchurch lies the grave of Anthony Hall, the man who claimed to be descended from Henry VIII, and he spent most of his life, and a considerable amount of money, trying to convince people of his claim to the throne.

The ordinary looking plot, marked by a low square wall, is the last resting place of a true English eccentric.

Anthony Hall was born in London in 1898, and claimed that he was a direct descendent of the illegitimate son of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, who was born before he divorced Katharine of Aragon.

He was a member of the police force, but he became a wealthy man after inheriting his father's fortune, and subsequently devoted his life to addressing public meetings and attempting to convince people of his claim.听

He also wrote to King George V in 1931, branding him an imposter!

Hall died in December 1947 at the age of 49 and, despite wide fame during his lifetime, it's unlikely that many of the visitors to St David's are aware that they may well be passing by a 'royal' grave.

You can find more fascinating stories in Nicola's book "Tales from Herefordshire's Graves". If you know of any famous graves or memorials in Herefordshire or Worcestershire that we could feature we like to hear from you.
