Emotional rollercoaster
We spent some years in Munich, Paris and then Sydney. Each time had it's successes and failures but the overall exeprience was good and it's great to look back on. It definitely made us appreciate England a little more when we returned home, however that isn't to take anything away from the places we lived in. Having relocated many times I think we have a wealth of experience, we had great times and times of great frustration. We set off to Munich in 1997 in our car and we drove accross Europe to Munich with our 5 year old daughter. We returned in 2001 from Sydney Australia with a new addition - our second daughter born in Australia. We coped with culture shock, extreme cold, extreme heat, times when money was rolling in and times when we sat and wondered where it had all gone. You really need to know what you are looking for when you are thinking about relocating. One of the things we missed most was just being able to pop in to friends or family for a cuppa. Also the nature of the conversations you have changes. People are fascinated by you living abroad and only ever want to talk about what it's like. People add pressure by visiting and staying too long or pressuring you to come back. It really can be an emotional rollercoaster. In my opinion not an experience to be missed though. We are now settled after another relocation and live in Berkshire.Would we do it again? Possibly. Do I have itchy feet? Sometimes. Would I relocate and do the corporate thing, commute, long hours? No, never!
