Don't rely on translations
Try not to equate a new word with its English equivalent. But look at the item and say the word in the 'new' language only.For example: You are learning Portuguese and see the word for cake is bolo.Look at the item or a picture of the item and say bolo. Say I like (or don't like) eating bolo, I like chocolate bolo and so on. Don't say the English word. Once you say 'bolo means cake' you will forget bolo and remember only cake!
