What a darling
When my friend arrived in Belgium, he stayed at a boarding house in Mechelen. Hearing the landlady calling her husband schat, my friend assumed it was the man's christian name and started calling him by this name. After a while he started wondering about the funny looks he got from the landlord and his wife. Then someone told him he had been calling the man 'darling' for quite some time!

Schat does indeed mean treasure, like Schatz in German. Together with the diminutive schatje, it is one of the most commonly used endearing terms.
Hahaha, this one is funny. Fortunately you are a woman, calling him schat doesn't sound so bad ...
Schatz, the German word for 'treasure', comes from the same root as schat ... and is also used as an endearing term!
