Good food, please
On our first trip to Germany my wife and I went into a restaurant. I wanted a steak, well done, but instead of saying "gut durchgebraten", well done, I said "gut gekocht", well cooked. I received a very frosty look and the riposte "Alles hier ist gut gekocht!" Everything here is well cooked.

Having lived in Germany for almost 4 years now, my experience is that Germans enjoy their meat well done and it always arrives that way unless you request it differently. My problem has been to get a steak that isn't well done. In my experience 'Englisch' is usually safe and comes medium-rareish. These is deemed 'blutig'!
I would stick to Nick's answer, just say you want your steak "
I can't think of another term, other than "
"
I've never been to Germany but I have practised with a friend I always tended to say gut durchgebraten is this asking for well done. I don't know need, help!
Editor's note: Yes, you can say gut durchgebraten as well.
I spent 3 years asking for my steak to be "durchgebrannt" (burnt through) - no wonder it was arriving cremated!
He assumed you were inferring that you would have to ask for the steak to be cooked well. He did not take "gut gekocht" as you meant it. Stick with "gut durchgebraten".
Note: although "kochen" can mean "to cook" in a general sense, it is also used more specifically to mean "to boil" ("ein gekochtes Ei", "kochendes Wasser" etc.)
