Stinky kind of guy
Some years ago we took our daughter to Austria so she could visit her pen-friend in Vienna. The family was very hospitable and fed us very well.It was the first time I had a taste of wiener schnitzel and this was the real thing. The smell was so good that I wanted to show my appreciation. I said in German that it smells great. Or so I thought.I couldn't quite understand why they thought it was hilarious. What I really said was: Ich stinke gern, I like to stink.
Editor's note: The phrase you were looking for was das riecht gut, it smells good. Just like the English verb "to smell", riechen can both be used transitive and intransitive eg. ich rieche das Schnitzel, I smell the schnitzel, and ich rieche nach Schnitzel, I smell of schnitzel.
