Mexican delights
Last year while I was in Frankfurt, I wished to savour the flavours of Mexican food in an authentic Mexican restaurant. With my knowledge of the Hispanic language, I thought I could enjoy the specialities all the more. During the meal, I wanted to have a cup of tea and very willingly expressed my desire to the waitress. What I got in return was not a cup of tea, but a peck on both my cheeks!! The reason for this nice surprise? I ordered the cup of tea by saying te quiero - 'I love you' - instead of quiero té - 'I want tea'!!

Having taken up Spanish for beginners in university and feeling confident I could handle the necessary Erasmus year out in Salamanca - what with my in-depth knowledge of the darker and depressing side of Spanish literature etc, I went out to do my first day of grocery shopping (with no day-to-day lingo at all I might add). No supermarket for me though- I was blending in with locals in the grocers on the corner. Having asked for some carrots and after much miming - which wasn't doing me any good at all - if you see what I mean... I left feeling happy I was offered broccoli and not a black eye!
That's funny, my boyfriend is English and the first time he decided to tell me he loved me he thought it would be a very good idea to say it Spanish. So he looked at me tenderly and said, Quiero té to what I replied, "Ok, if it means so much to you I'll make you a cup of tea!" Needless to say I'll never let him forget that.
My friend Blake also suffered a similar experience in a Mexican restaurant. Except, he was offered a confused "Come again?"
