My eight hurts
While on a brief stop-over in Buenos Aires some years ago I developed an eye infection. I went to the chemist and tried to explain myself by telling him that I had a problem with my ochos. Fortunately he was able to work out what I meant by looking at me.The correct word for eyes is los ojos.

I swear that in Andrea Bocelli's Spanish version of Por ti volare he sings abriendo los ajos por fin. I guess it was about time for him to open his garlic!
After speaking Spanish for quite a few years I can still cause some amusement amongst friends. Whilst entertaining some Spanish business colleagues in a restaurant in England I had to translate into Spanish. The salsa de ojo didn't appeal to them very much. Since then I've never forgotten that Spanish for 'garlic' is ajo, not ojo, eye.
My students have learned el oso de peluche or plush (stuffed) bear for "teddy bear" in their Spanish vocabulary for years. Inevitably at least one student every year will refer to this item as an ocho (eight) de peluche or even worse, an "ojo (eye) de peluche when describing their favorite childhood toys. Eww. A stuffed eye? Always good for a laugh.
