Riddle

Je suis ce que je suis.
Mais je ne suis pas ce que je suis.
Car si j'etais ce que je suis
Je ne serais pas ce que je suis.
Que suis-je ?
La reponse - un berger. A shepherd. (je suis = I am, je suis = I follow)
I am what I am but I'm not what I'm following.
I've not yet met a French person who could answer this one - but all liked it.

Using the same ambiguity of 'je suis', couldn't the answer also be your own shadow?

Here is one that puzzled everyone in my primary school years in France: Un sot qui portait un sceau dans un seau fit un saut. Tous les [so] tombèrent à l'eau. How should the [so] be spelt? I cannot remember the teacher coming up with a convincing answer.
