Career move
Bristol, 23rd January
In another two weeks we will have left this house for ever and will be on our way to a new life in AndalucÃa. There is so much to do and it's so exciting that we hardly have time to think about the enormity of what we are doing. There are moments when it all feels very scary but we are sure that it's the right step for us to take. What I can't understand is why the house doesn't seem empty after the endless trips to the tip and to the charity shop, to say nothing of all the things we have given to friends and family. My best friend (shown in the picture) now has all my work clothes which I sincerely hope I will never need again. In spite of all our efforts at clearing out, removal costs are still very high. And the electricity installation that is hopefully nearing completion as I write is also 50% higher than we had expected. I have a feeling this may be a taste of things to come and that we may have underestimated costs all round - a salutary lesson for anyone else planning a similar move. We'll see how it goes once we get there and start on the renovation and building work.
Fond farewells
Our social diary has never been so full as it is for the next two weeks. It's hard to fit everyone in but we are doing our best! We feel as if we're not going to be far away but I know it's not quite the same seeing friends for holidays as it is being able to pop round to see them whenever you want to. I'll be relying heavily on el correo electrónico, e-mail, and getting the phone line in will be my first priority when we arrive. I need to be conectada, connected to the Internet as soon as possible. As a temporary measure I've set up an internet-based e-mail address so I'll be down at el cibercafé, the internet café every couple of days. I guess we will also need el teléfono móvil, the mobile phone, just in case of motoring mishaps in the middle of nowhere. Using a UK mobile out there to make or receive calls is very expensive, so I'll need to get a mobile phone account in Spain.
Tiger's tale
The saddest thing is leaving my three-legged cat. Her name is Tiger and I've had her since she was born 15 years ago. We decided that it wouldn't be fair to take her into the wilds of the Spanish countryside and fortunately a very good friend has offered to give her a home. So this weekend Tiger is moving to Nottingham and I fully expect to be more traumatised than she will be about the whole thing!
