Restoration
Blackwell House has not been used as a family home for over half a century. Since then it has accommodated two schools and the offices of English Nature, but despite this it has survived remarkably intact. Had it continued as a family home, it is likely that the original interiors would have been damaged by attempts at "modernisation".

During the Second World War, owner Edward Holt, who had no children of his own and rarely used the building, allowed Blackwell House to be occupied by the pupils of Huyton College Liverpool. Following the war, the house was established as Blackwell School, a girl's prep school. This closed in 1976 and the property was sold again.
The building is now owned by the Lakeland Arts Trust, which also runs a nearby gallery. The Trust launched a fundraising campaign in 1998 which allowed them to purchase the house for £750,000 the following year. The whole restoration project took over four years to complete, and the site was officially opened by HRH the Prince of Wales in September 2001. Expert architects, including a Baillie Scott enthusiast from the London firm Allies and Morrison, supervised the work. The whole enterprise cost around £3.5 million, a large part of which was met by a Heritage Lottery grant.

The Trust's aim was to create a truly artistic house within the frame of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Much of the furniture in the house at the time of the Holt family did not fit in well with this style, and so the rooms have not been restored exactly as they were. Instead other, more suitable works of fine and applied art have been acquired and used to furnish the rooms. Blackwell House now exists as a tribute to the Arts and Crafts Movement, and epitomises Ballie Scott's work.
