From factories into flats |
|
Once the home of 'King Cotton', Manchester was a vibrant and bustling city. As the birthplace of industrialisation, its population more than trebled in 60 years.
But from such a high can only come a severe low. The textile industry all but deserted the city in the 1950s, leaving its architectural stamp. Huge swathes of the city were awash with underused and derelict factories, a sad reminder of the city's former glory. Now the city is proudly reclaiming these grim memorials and once again is leading the way - this time in regeneration, giving the world the phenomenon of Factories into Flats.
