Edinburgh in the eighteenth Century was in a state of turmoil, both intellectual and physical. The Scottish Enlightenment centred on the coffee houses and drawing rooms of the city, and the greatest thinkers of the age gravitated towards the city. However, there was a darker edge to Edinburgh, and scenes of abject squalor, hinted at by its nickname of Auld Reekie, nestled alongside the great achievements of the age. It is the dichotomy of this period of Edinburgh's history that has created the unique look of the city.
