Challenges
In recent the years the traveller community has been in a state of flux. Changes in economic and employment patterns have reduced their traditional opportunities for work, and accommodation has also proved a challenge. The number of pitches available has decreased as lay-bys have been gradually filled in, and increasing numbers of travellers and gypsies have had to move into housing.

Many travellers have found it difficult to adjust, feeling isolated from family networks, which are traditionally so strong within this community. Most of those who have settled into housing still strongly identify themselves as travellers, with a distinct cultural identity.
The travelling community today still faces many problems, from those of health and education, to the difficulty of holding onto their identity in these changing times – something made even harder in some cases where travellers feel compelled to hide their identity for fear of harassment.
