The Leeds West Indian Carnival claims to be the oldest Caribbean carnival in Britain. Crowd numbers have swollen from 1,000 to over 100,000 since it started in 1967. The carnival’s development reflects the evolution of the city’s British-Caribbean community, helping melt the frosty welcome they received in the 1950s and establish Leeds as a multicultural city. "I have been enjoying the carnival every year in Leeds for the past five years, I did not realise how long established it was! When you think of carnivals, you almost automatically think that Notting Hill Carnival is the oldest.
