student lifeYou are in: Leicester > Students > student life > A Passion for Fashion A Passion for FashionBy Laura Elahi, Guest Contributor Laura from Leicester met a De Montfort University fashion graduate who feels he's set to make his mark. He was full of flair, but will this be enough to see him through? Laura has more! After spending time talking to Jayesh Mandalia about his designs, I feel that he could be a new name in fashion? Unless you have an exclusive insight into the world of fashion it's unlikely that you will have heard of Jay Mandalia. But could this change in the near future?
Who is Jay?At just 24, Jayesh Mandalia has created an impressive portfolio for any up and coming designer. His collection was featured in London's 'Graduate Fashion Week', he has a host of London stores hoping to stock his clothes and he's about to launch his own label, "Jmandalia".听听 Born and living in Leicester Jayesh (also known as Jay) began work at the age of 11 at his dad's factory. There he learnt how to design and manufacture jeans for the high street and developed a love for fashion. "I was influenced by my father and his brothers to become a fashion designer," says Jay. "My whole family comes from a fashion background, so it just felt natural following the same road." A听Creative DesignerJay began his career as a menswear designer by taking GCSE textiles at the Robert Smyth School in Market Harborough. There he then took and an AVCE in art and design followed by a fashion degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. "I learnt the bulk of my skills through my father and family. But my lectures Paul McNicoll and Della Swain really transformed me from being a high street designer to a more creative designer." At De Montfort, Jay learnt how to develop his skills and explore his creativity by working with a variety of fabrics and clean cuts to create a modern and high quality style. His unique and fresh look is rapidly getting noticed and a he has a respected reputation across London, where he hopes to begin selling his collection.听听 Dior and LangJay says he is inspired by the likes of Dior and Helmut Lang. His aim is to produce original and luxurious clothes which are accessible to the high street consumers. "I like to create everyday clothes people can wear with a few couture pieces. I'm a menswear designer so I like to create garments with detail, clean cut with something different that no one else can offer. "The fit is important to me just as much as the look of the garment. Everything must balance nicely together." My LabelDespite his growing popularity, the young designer continues to work within the family business whilst developing his talents. "I wouldn't say I want to be a famous fashion designer because I don't want to be famous. But I'd like to push my talents as far as I can so that I can look back and have great memories one day. "Hopefully I'll be able to inspire and help other students reach high limits through my work." Jay is currently concentrating on his growing clothes label and working on his up and coming website where people will be able to purchase his garments. Despite his modest approach to fashion it鈥檚 clear to see that his hard work and recognition is well deserved.
