Holidays At Home

Will the new trend 'Staycation' mean that we'll see an increase in tourists this summer in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland? 成人论坛 Leicester's Julie Mayer finds out - listen to her interview...

It might sound like a cross between a games console and an embarrassing medical condition, but chances are you're already planning to do it yourself this year!

What are we talking about?

Staycation is believed to be very much the trend this year. It is when families decide to stay in the UK and holiday here instead of going abroad - hopefully to soften the effects of the recession.

Resorts around coastal areas of England, Wales and Scotland have already reported larger numbers of tourists visiting attractions and staying in hotels and guest houses.

"We've got the Great Central Railway, Bradgate Park, Beacon Hill and many more features that people can visit."

So will we also feel the effects of increased numbers of tourists here in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland this summer?

成人论坛 Leicester's Julie Mayer took a trip to Whatoff Lodge Farm in Leicestershire to find out...

The farm in Quorn is a working farm, but it also has its own campsite. The site owner, Rad Thomas, believes that Leicestershire has a lot to offer tourists.

"It's been much busier this year. I think we have seen a 50 per cent increase and it's mainly people coming for two or three days and extended weekends.

"People are coming here instead of going abroad for their second holiday.

"There is so much to see and do around here. We've got the Great Central Railway, Bradgate Park, Beacon Hill and many more features that people can visit."

Tourist Boom

This year some experts believe that as many as a third of the public could switch their plans from a holiday abroad to a break in the UK.

But can campsites like Whatoff Lodge Farm manage an increase in tourists?

"We have definitely geared up for that. We have increased our facilities - we've made a function room available for if we have bad weather and our holiday-makers want to get together.

"We have improved the site itself and facilities to take advantage in this upswing in the industry."

"People want peace, quite, something new, something reasonably priced and somewhere they can enjoy themselves."

A New Experience

Rad has noticed that most people are not coming from a great distances.

"They are coming in two halves. There are those who are coming in transit, either going north up to Scotland or going down to the south coast from the other end of the county.

"The other half of our customers live within around 30 or 40 miles and they are trying the East Midlands or this particular part of the East Midlands as a new experience."

Rad believes that holiday-makers want; "Peace, quite, something new, something reasonably priced and somewhere they can enjoy themselves."
