The sun was out and the birds were singing as I made my way to this year's Dad鈥檚 Army day at Bressingham Steam Museum near Diss. The Dad鈥檚 Army day has been running since the year 2000 and has been popular with the fans. The day was attended by a mass of fans who were all excited to see and meet the stars of the long-running comedy series. Cast reunited The stars arrived in an old army vehicle at midday to a big cheer from the crowds. The stars who made the journey to Norfolk included Eric Longworth (town clerk Claude Gordon), Pam Cundell (Mrs Fox), Harold Snoad (production assistant), Frank Williams (Reverend Timothy Farthing), Bill Pertwee (air raid warden Hodges) and David Croft (co-writer, producer and director)

The day began with a brief word from each of the stars. Frank Williams spoke of filming in Thetford and relayed a story about Ian Lavender (Pike).听 Pam Cundell and Eric Longworth acted out a funny scene from an episode, while David Croft spoke of comedies today and told us why he thought Dad鈥檚 Army was so successful. The stars then made their way to the main hall to sign autographs. I queued up to get my many Dad鈥檚 Army books signed and had the chance to chat with the stars as I walked by. Every time I go to a Dad鈥檚 Army event the stars attending are always happy to talk to you about their days working on the series and what it was like to be involved in one of Britain's best-loved sitcoms.听 Walmington re-created I walked down Walmington High Street which has been built in the main building at Bressingham - it is very realistic and gives off a great sense of wartime. The writers, Jimmy Perry and David Croft, have donated several of the original scripts to the museum as well as the final script from the last episode which is signed by the entire cast. Several parts of the Dad鈥檚 Army set have been re-built to give fans an idea of what the surroundings were like during filming.

The vehicles used in Dad's Army were parked outside which attracted lots of fans.听 Jones' van is always a big favourite and looks immaculate every time I see it. The van that was used in the Dad's Army film could also be seen, along with the fire truck and several other vehicles used in the sitcom. All the fans had big smiles on their faces as they had their books, posters and pictures signed, and the stars seemed to enjoy re-living a great part of their lives before they left in the army vehicle. The Dad's Army celebrations may be over for another year, but hopefully I'll be able to enjoy the event next year too. The Dad's Army day took place on Sunday 15 May 2005. |
