Venus from a telescope

What colour is Venus? Is there life on Venus?

Read the answers to your questions on Venus by local astronomer, Mark.

Venus in known to be covered in cloud, besides that, are there any other markings seen or known to be on Venus? (Like there is a giant red spot on Jupiter)?
HUSMITA, AGE 12, TORONTO, CANADA

Answer: It's very hard to find anything on the surface of Venus because it is covered in cloud but using radar we can see through it and find what lies beneath.

We have discovered many features on the surface of Venus like the bright region in the centre of the picture which is one of two high mountainous areas called Aphrodite Terra.

With the technology of today could people live on Venus or any other planet?
DEVEN, AGE 13, BATESVILLE, MS

Answer: We don't have the technology today for people to live permanently on any other planet in our solar system.

When we do eventually move to other planets, we would either have to change its atmosphere or make our own enclosed atmosphere but that has challenges of its own.

How many days on earth does it take for a year on Venus to pass?
GRACE, AGE 9, BOLINGBROOK, ILLINOIS, USA

Answer: A year on Venus lasts for about 225 Earth days.

Did anything ever live on Mars or Venus if so, what?
EVAN, CANADA

Answer: There is no evidence for life on Venus but Mars is a different story. We have found very strong evidence for biological activity on Mars and also for flowing liquid on Mars.

If life did exist there it would have been very very simple life, more basic than bacteria we find on Earth.

What colour is Venus?
RINA, AGE 11, THORNHILL

Answer: When we look at Venus through telescopes we can only see the tops of its clouds. We cannot see the surface. It looks a grey/blue colour.

How do the greenhouse gases affect Venus?
RIANNA, AGE 12

Answer: The greenhouse gasses on Venus stop heat from escaping. On Venus, incoming sunlight passes through the atmosphere and heats up the ground.

The ground gets warm and then starts to warm up the atmosphere next to it. Because of the greenhouse gasses, like carbon dioxide and methane, the heat cannot escape and so it just gets hotter and hotter.

The surface temperature on Venus is about 500 degrees.

How many hours does it take Venus to turn around?
LESLIE, AGE 9

Answer: The Earth takes a little under 24 hours to turn around once. Venus is a lot slower. It takes 2,802 hours to spin once - that's a long day.

Is there life on Venus?
KIERRA GREEN, AGE 9

Answer: There is no life on Venus that we know of. Any life there would either by boiled alive, squashed or dissolved - not a nice place to go to for your summer holidays!

How long would it take to get to Venus if you could travel at the speed of light?
KC, AGE 13

Answer: The distance between the Earth and Venus changes because the two planets move around the Sun.

If we could travel at the speed of light (300,000km per second) then if Venus is at its nearest to the Earth it would take just over two minutes to get there.

When it is at its most distant point from the Earth it will take a little over 14 minutes. What a great way to travel that would be!

What are the materials that Venus is made up of?
EZZA, AGE 13

Answer: Like the Earth, Venus has a core that is thought to be made of iron with some nickel. This is surrounded by a mantle and crust of the same rocky materials found here on Earth.
