In 17 years I hadn’t ever watched the 1991 Final. Having been there I missed the live coverage, and ever since I’ve resisted the temptation to sit down and look at it again in case it didn’t match the experience of actually being there.Ìý So when Days Like This dug the video out of the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ vault and I sat down to relive the day itself, the first thing that struck me was the glow. The red glow off the fans who had all come in their Down jerseys…it was like a Ready-Brek ad. Ìý
And when that final whistle blew, history was made for a whole new generation of Down fans…and watching it now, I feel sorry that the wee kids following the team nowadays haven’t yet experienced that feeling when your team wins an All-Ireland.
Maybe we need to play them re-runs of the glory days to inspire the 2008 team to great things. Now where would I get a copy of that match…

See John watching the match again for the first time in 17 years...
